Kindle Version is Error-Ridden

This review is not about the story (which I enjoyed), but focuses only on the editing of the Kindle version. Long sections of dialogue are missing most of their punctuation, leaving numerous run-on sentences. I had to work hard to decipher when one sentence ended and another began. It's as if someone was transcribing hurriedly from the book, and not stopping to put in the punctuation.

In one section near the end, it seemed as if basic plot information was also missing. I could make no sense of it, and finally just moved on. I have not seen this problem with Alcott's other works in Kindle. It's hard to complain about something that was free, so I'll just say, if you want the gist of the story, this is fine. But if you want a smoother read, it would be worth paying for a better version.

One of my favorite's from Louisa May Alcott

Lovely story, for adults and children. I recommend that you read "Eight Cousins" first as this is the sequel to that story. I love the story of Rose and Uncle Mac and all her cousins and I still get a little weepy when I get to the chapter, "Alas, for Charlie!" I've read this book about several times over the last 20 some years. It has a beautiful conclusion and goes to show that a book that was written over a hundred years ago still can be so beloved today. I also recommend "An Old Fashioned Girl" by Louisa May Alcott if you like this story.

Better Every Time You Read It

The sequel to Eight Cousins, Rose In Blue follows the cousins as they grow up. Written as cleanly and delicately as Alcott's other works, we follow Rose, Mac, Charlie, Phoebe and the rest of the family on Aunt Hill through adolescence to their adult success, and it's every bit as engaging and heart-warming as Eight Cousins was.

Even after decades of life, and a half dozen reads or so, this book still makes me tear up in places, and I am not ashamed to admit that in the least. The book recalls a time and culture that were cleaner and simpler in many ways than what we have now, and turning the pages is like going back in time--I have so many happy memories tied up with this book, and others I enjoyed as a young girl.

You won't find all the tools modern authors use to hold attention here--violence, sex, bad language or unnatural, ridiculous plots and sub-plots. What you will find is simple, clear language, a smooth presentation of the values and morals of the authoress' times, and very simple, human characters that worry about the only things that are really important in life, when you come right down to it.

Louisa May Alcott's books should be the first books you introduce your child to--because the world (and the people in it) still need the values she writes about so naturally, and you'd be hard pressed to find those values in any of the "modern" children's books on the market. And for adults--why not take a trip back into your childhood and enjoy a simple, well written book again?

A comprehensive, foundational reference text for psychiatry

[[VIDEOID:c0b1baf34ad62fa12ef92762978c1c98]]Synopsis of Psychiatry as long been the gold standard of psychiatric textbooks. Walk into most mental health clinician's offices and this sits on their book shelf. My alma mater used the 10th edition of this book throughout the entire program.

I recently developed a psychiatry program for a local university and was selecting the foundational textbook. I went about comparing this book with Black's (2014) Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry, Sixth Edition, Hale's (2014) The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry, and Gabbard's (2014) Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders. While Black, Gabbard, & Hale all offer something unique, this book by far provides the most in-depth and comprehensive overview of the field of psychiatry. This book is also priced similarly or cheaper than the books noted above. In the end, I stuck with Synopsis of Psychiatry.

The downside to this book is that it is very heavy with 1400+ pages. The text is tiny and organized into two columns per page. Sometimes I find it difficult to follow the textual organization on each page. This is likely not a book you will read cover to cover. The only colored images are of different medication pills and brain imaging at the front of the book. The rest of the book is black, white, and pink. I should note, that the other books I mentioned above are also in grey scale and have far fewer images throughout the text.

Compared with the books mentioned above, Synopsis of Psychiatry provides more detailed historical information about each mental illness and a much more thorough discussion of child and adolescent psychiatry. This book, compared with others, also provides more information about theories of personality and psychopathology and it includes two chapters dedicated to the contributions of psychosocial sciences and sociocultural sciences.

For each mental disorder, this book does include the DSM 5 criteria, history, epidemiology, clinical features, associated symptoms, differential diagnosis, course, prognosis, and treatment options. On the other hand, Gabbard's text offers a much more detailed analysis of treatment options for each individual disorder.

In the end, this is an excellent foundational and reference textbook. It is bulky, heavy, and difficult to read the tiny text. The paperback version does come with a "free enhanced ebook." I would recommend using this or the Kindle version and reading the book on your tablet or computer. It lends to a much more comfortable reading experience.

Still one of the best psychiatry textbooks.

This text book has been a study companion and reference for me since my residency days. I used this book in conjunction with the K/S review questions book to prepare for board exams and use it frequently to read up on specific topics. The book is very comprehensive. I"m still exploring the new edition, thus far I especially appreciate the update on genetics and pharmacology, among others. The DSM-5 update of all chapters is helpful for review. Actually no need to buy the APA DSM-5 book separately, this book has all the diagnostic categories in tables and explanations of diagnostic criteria. Also has numerous cases. All in all, a very worthwhile purchase.

Addendum: The purchase includes e_book access. Tried the e_book on my android tablet and find that there is no highlighting function, no copy or print function, no note function,no good text to speech function etc. All it offers is basic book reading, nothing else. Needs more functions such as those mentioned to be fully useful. I understand that more functions are offered for iOS and windows platform, android needs work.

I really liked being able to download the e_book to my android tablet via the Inkling app from google play store. It was very easy to do and once downloaded, no internet connection is necessary for reading. I consider this feature a real plus, reminds me of kindle. The downside is that Inkling download/reading is limited to two devices, tough if you are a 'multi-devicer' .

Of course, the book is wonderful. I have had all previous editions and this is up to, or surpasses previous standards. This volume is very very heavy and the ereader option is a great plus. HOWEVER, I have found the Inkling.com website, where you register the book, very very poorly constructed and very hard to navigate. As far as I can tell so far, if you havet he book open on one device, you will not be able to open it on another. And I, as yet, have not been able to download it to my iPad. The website, for me is very user unfriendly and very frustrating. This is not a book you can bring with you on a subway commute.

they weren't joking - 50/50.

when i come across an artifact like this, i take it as a proof that the universe is truly incomprehensible, that meaning is arbitrary, that, at the very least, the entire canon of human values is so much worthless nonsense, and as such, it can't possibly matter that i'm about to graduate with a degree in design/illustration and i sometimes freak out over whether i'm "good enough."
how does such a one as ronnblom get published. how does this happen. somebody explain this to me, because the fact has overturned my entire universe of meaning. i'm not just being a design snob... if a high skool freshman showed up blazed for art class one day (having only taken it as an elective blow-off easy A in the first place), and happened to sit down in front of photoshop and mess with it for an hour out of sheer boredom, he might produce something similar, if more sophisticated.
lindholm's stuff (by contrast) is well-organized and attractive. don't talk to me about "dated." digital images are dated by the time you print them out; let's just grant that and get on with separating the gold from the dross, cuz good design is good design and bad is bad. (i believe that in spite of everything.) you wouldn't know it from looking at this book though, which brings me back to my original point. you see some really visually interesting vector and photoshop/3d pieces of lindholm's in the first part, and youre on a certain level, and then you get to that utter garbage from ronnblom and it's really upsetting. later they collaborate, and you can literally separate out which parts of the compositions ronnblom screwed up with his unfortunate use of filters and what-not. finally there are some interesting pieces by various designers more or less within the aesthetic that lindholm uses in his pieces - vast, technological-looking environments with layers of photoshop collage and vector line drawings and schematics, typically organized around a "burst" of 3d objects and text.
this is a decent book, and the CD includes a lot of "fun extras." really the only thing to warn you about is ronnblom - have i mentioned him yet? be prepared. otherwise enjoy, even if it makes you feel cool about yourself to call it "dated."

Still a pleasure

I've owned this book for a few years and I still find it a joy to look at. Quite frankly, although I admire and get great pleasure from Andreas Lindstrom's work, it's Anders F Rönnblom that draws me back. His work is risky, different, strange; and like all such experimental work, is up for the usual share of negative comments: it's not safe, pre-approved by the design corporation. If you want technologically stylised à la mode images then, as has been said, 50% of the book will suit you. But if you also want some avante garde/experimental work you'll love it the more.

Every designer has a vision, to surpass all thats been done before them, to move forward with new ideals and create a new standard for which others may follow. This book is the future of design. Everything in this book is brand new and fresh. The designs range from biomorphic to minimalist, chaotic to organic and most of the time they just all meld together to form one dynamic form like nothing you have ever seen. Metalheart is a book like no other, if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a copy it may very well change your whole perspective on design. ENJOY!

Very good!

Maybe because he has always written the lyrics in the various projects in which he participated, GIllan wrote a sensitive and simple history, educately not losing much time describing the others members of Purple, but focusing mainly on the music industry, the ideas behind the records, his ideas about rock'n'roll. It's very, very good reading.

outstanding in every way

Ian Gillan has been not only one of rock's all-time greatest vocalists, also a lyricist of great talent and a true rock and roll personality for the ages. As a member of Deep Purple's key Mark II lineup, and through his various solo projects, he's been everywhere, done everything. An honest autobiography covering his life and times would make for a wild roller coaster of a read. And so it is.

So many musicians seem to know how to play their instruments, but don't know how to string a few words together on paper. Gillan's book, by contrast, is well enough written, positively brimming with his personality and great sense of humor, and stuffed with hilarious stories. It is a joy to read.

Gillan's story begins with his family, his cronies in the neighborhood, and early stabs at becoming rich and famous, initially not terribly successful in either direction. Following his major career breaks, getting into Purple and the success of the Jesus Christ Superstar recordings, he covers it all: his bumpy (to say the least) relationship with the legendary Ritchie Blackmore, life on the road, various incidents of band misbehavior, quitting the band, the various business failures which left him broke once more, and then rise back to the top of the hard rock music business (and lifestyle). He goes into management issues, the various bands and musicians, tour management, the girls on the road, you name it. Even some stories on some of the bands they toured with - like the wild days of the tour supporting the Faces - are included, every one of them hilarious. I would have liked to read a bit more on some particular issues, but as an overview, he seems to strive to cover all stages of his long career fairly evenly. At close to 300 pages, including a discography, he gives us a lot. Throughout the book the voice is unmistakably Gillan, jokester, drinking buddy, musician, emotional and touchy sparring partner. If you want to know about life on the road, all over the world, with one of the most successful touring bands of the last 25 years, this is the book to read. It is outstanding.

Fascinating look at a rock lead singer's life.

Ian Gillan's first success was in Lebanon with Episode Six in the mid-sixties. Returning home to a largely indifferent England, he then signed on with Deep Purple, which went on to become one of the best selling bands of its time.
The book tells the story of the good times as well as bad. There were successes with other bands like Gillan and Black Sabbath, and his lead role in the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar. There were also tough times: money problems, internal conflicts and the recurring musical and professional conflicts with legendary Deep Purple guitar wizard Ritchie Blackmore.
The band continues on today -- with Gillan but without Blackmore, (replaced by the equally amazing Steve Morse) and the book takes us right up to present day. The writing is understated but the tales are fascinating. A must-have for any hard rock music fan.

Fantastic book on safe money strategies

Easy to read and understand, the graphs and text explain this particular wealth management strategy very well. When I finished I called the author Mr. Phillips and his team answered all my questions. Would recommend this book to anyone looking for ideas on wealth creation and management. I don't normally read books on finance, but this one was refereed to me by a friend who attended a MoneyShow in Las Vegas.

I'm sold on the Family Bank Strategy!

Reading the Family Bank Strategy opened my eyes to positive changes in the insurance industry since the days of "buy term and invest the difference". I was looking for a way to preserve my investment capital in a way that was not tied directly to the stock market, but that still had growth potential, but much less downside. After reading David Phillips book, I found that burying an indexed universal life insurance policy, even at my age, would not only meet my investment objectives, but would also provide a way for me to withdraw money, tax free, to use as supplemental retirement income, or to make low cost loans to my kids and grand kids. It also provides me with peace of mind in case I don't live as long as I would hope, since my wife will be taken care of with the proceeds of the death benefit. David's book is easy to read and understand. I talked to him several times on the phone and always found him willing to answer my questions and address my concerns. I also liked the fact that his book was recommended by the Retirement Watch Newsletter, which I subscribe to.

I was skeptical at first that I could qualify for insurance at my age, but when I did, it began a fruitful path for achieving my wealth management/estate planning objectives. If your circumstances are similar to mine, this book will likely be very beneficial for you...

Vital for smaller businesses, still good for larger ones

I recommend this to all my entrepreneur friends. Especially those who have businesses grossing under $5m. After that they pretty much get it. But I do reread the book every year or two just to make sure I still understand. Really good stuff. Wish it had been around when I was starting up!

Solid book

I saw Greg speak at an event earlier this year and it really inspired me to think differently about how I manage the cash flow of my business. He had several concepts that made me sit back and think. I began working on the ideas from his speech and it really made a difference in my life. It was nice to see that his book took those same ideas and added stories to further my understanding. The key takeaways were simple to understand and not difficult to implement as long as I committed to making them happen. The book is a positive nudge toward managing the cash flow of business correctly.

Gr 5–8—A boy's visit to meet his great-grandmother for the first time turns into a nightmare when Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans. Twelve-year-old Zane has not known many family members other than his mother; after she makes contact with his deceased father's grandmother, Zane travels to the oppressively humid city. When New Orleans is placed under a mandatory evacuation, Zane and his great-grandmother leave with his dog, Bandy, and her pastor; when Bandy is spooked by growling Dobermans, he leaps from the car, followed by Zane. Zane and Bandy endure the hurricane's landfall and the failure of the levees at his great-grandmother's house until they meet a young girl, Malvina, and her guardian, Tru. The trio canoes through the snake-infested waters seeking assistance. Arriving in a neighborhood protected by privately hired security forces leads to vicious threats from the armed guards, who are loading helicopters stuffed with rugs and other expensive items. After their canoe is stolen, they head to the chaos of the Superdome and eventually to a bridge connecting the city to Algiers, in which they hope to find Tru's cousin. Vivid descriptions of the toxic waters, the commotion at the Superdome, and racial tension are handled factually yet sensitively. Information about unique New Orleans customs, including "jazz funerals," its history of biracialism, and accents are occasionally inserted. Together they face difficulties both natural and human, from terrifying swirls of snakes in the putrid floodwater to organized militia “protecting” affluent neighborhoods from looters. Philbrick examines issues of race and class with a deft hand (Zane is of mixed race himself), letting the story unfold directly and leaving moralizing to the reader. Zane and the Hurricane: A Suspenseful Novel by Philbrick

It has been years since I have read Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, so details of the story are hazy at best. But, my total love of the book has always stayed with me. This fall I was quite excited to hear that Philbrick had another book to be published.

Zane and the Hurricane takes place during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005. Zane has never known his father, who died before he was born. His mother doesn't talk a lot about him and the two met while in the military, so they were not from the same town, and didn't know each other's families.

When Zane's mom discovers the grandma who raised Zane's dad is alive and well in New Orleans, she sends Zane to spend some time with her so the two can get to know each other. The visit itself is going well, but a storm is threatening Louisiana and as things progress the storm develops into Hurricane Katrina.

Zane's mother is trying to provide assistance from afar, and his great grandmother is doing her best to get them to a safe place, but when Zane jumps out of the church van taking him and his great grandma to safety in order to chase his dog that jumped out the window, the two become separated.
That's when things become a little bit scary.

There are a lot of struggles Zane must deal with in order to get to safety - more than just Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. On his journey, Zane is befriended by a feisty young girl and an elderly musician, who are also on their way to finding help. Dwindling food supplies, rising flood waters, hospitals unable to provide assistance, and a police presence that was not always helpful depending on the color of a person's skin are just a few of the page-turning problems that Philbrick's characters must overcome.

Philbrick has managed to create a story with suspense that centers around a time of great sadness. Zane and the Hurricane is just one of a growing number of books set during Hurricane Katrina, and I appreciate the research Philbrick has done in recreating the storm and its effect on the people of New Orleans.

Zane and the Hurricane would make a great read aloud or book club selection. I have students - boys and girls - to whom I am anxious to give this title. Philbrick has written another winner.

A realistic, relatable and touching account of Hurricane Katrina

Unbelievably, August 2014 will mark the nine-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. For those who experienced Katrina firsthand it is likely to feel like it happened just weeks ago, especially as many are still trying to recover. For the millions of us who watched Katrina and its aftermath unfold via our televisions, or at least for myself, the images remain as vivid to me today as the first time I saw them.

For us, the stories of Hurricane Katrina exist under the label of contemporary realistic fiction. However, for many young readers, Katrina occurred before they existed or before they had solid memories of the world. For these readers, ZANE AND THE HURRICANCE: A Story of Katrina is a work of historical fiction. Regardless of the label applied to Philbrick’s newest novel, readers will find a realistic, relatable and touching account of Hurricane Katrina from the eyes of two “outsiders,” Philbrick and Zane.

Zane Dupree, the main character in ZANE AND THE HURRICANE, happens to be in the worst place at the very worst time. Zane has traveled from New Hampshire to New Orleans to meet the great grandmother he didn’t know existed just a short while ago, Miss Trissy. Because Zane’s mother is desperate for Zane to build a connection with the paternal side of the family --- Zane’s father died before he was born --- she wants to send Zane to New Orleans to meet Miss Trissy immediately. Zane protests to no avail, but is eventually allowed to bring his dog and best friend, Bandit, along for the trip.

Miss Trissy and Zane develop an instant connection despite the years and history that separate them. Unfortunately, the two have very little time to build this relationship before the threats of Hurricane Katrina cause them to flee the city. However, as they are leaving, Bandit escapes from the car and Zane, driven by love for his dog, rather than logic, follows him back into the heart of New Orleans and into the path of the storm. The pair survives the hurricane but almost succumbs to the flooding before being rescued by an older man, Mr. Tru, and a young girl, Malvina, in a canoe. As this trio (and Bandit) search for safety and strive for survival, they experience some of the best and worst of people and New Orleans. However, they grow to be a family who, by loving and supporting one another, survives and triumphs through this tragedy.

I was blessed to hear Philbrick speak about ZANE AND THE HURRICANE recently and was particularly struck by the attention he paid to being an outsider and struggling with who has the right to tell a story. Philbrick has spent much of his life living along a coast and is no stranger to the storms that come with this locale. He always knew he wanted to write a story about the natural disasters that are common on the coast and when Hurricane Katrina struck, he knew he had the topic of his story.

But as much experience as he had living along a coast, he was not from New Orleans and had not experienced Katrina himself. Instead of denying his outsider perspective, he decided to embrace it by making his main character, Zane, an outsider as well. Although he completed extensive research on Katrina and its aftermath in New Orleans, he knew this would not overcome his outsiderness and Zane allowed him to compensate for this. At the time I applauded Philbrick for recognizing and accounting for his outsider status. After reading ZANE AND THE HURRICANE, I can only further commend him on his approach and his effort to provide a realistic and honest account of what Hurricane Katrina may have been like for one young boy from New Hampshire.

Can't Put it Down

I bought this book for my daughter, a second grader, because she loves any good weather related story. Each night when it is time for us to read together before bed, I am anxious and excited to get started reading another chapter of this incredible story. On evenings when my daughter has taken the book to school to read more of it during the day, I make her recap for me on all the details I missed before we can start reading together. I cannot tell you the last time, if ever, I have wanted to read a book so much!
