About the Author
Dr. Franco-Paredes is a practicing clinician in internal medicine and infectious diseases with an MPH in global health and 14 years of clinical activities in travel and tropical medicine, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, leprosy, vaccine-preventable diseases and general infectious diseases. Concomitantly with clinical duties, he has also participated in international consultations in global health over the last 10 years. His interests have included epidemiological and clinical aspects of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and vaccine-preventable diseases. Dr. Franco-Paredes is currently a Consultant Coalition against Typhoid Program at Sabin Vaccine Institute, Washington, D.C; and Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico, Federico Gomez.

Better than the Rest

A friend of mine recently introduced me to this book and I have to say, I'm impressed. It's fantastic! I studied anatomy in my first year of med school so I'm familiar with the other big Atlases (Netter's, Gray's, Gosling's, Grant's...) but in my opinion this book surpasses them all. It's the artwork. The artist has found the perfect balance of detail and clarity. Some of these illustrations have to be seen to be believed. Especially those relating to the circulatory system. The book also cuts down on superfluous text, providing the most relevant information. The pearls of clinical information are very good and these add significance to the information and make it easier to remember -- Easier to remember is key.

Great job to whoever was involved in making this invaluable resource!

The Best Anatomy Book I've Used

This anatomy book is great for studying university-level anatomy. It shows many body parts that are not listed in other books. The illustrations are good, too. This book also comes with a code for online access. I highly recommend this atlas.

Quite an excellent Human Anatomy atlas--better than Netter

What is in the book: This is a stand-alone atlas of Human Gross Anatomy. The pictures are all painted drawings, with some clinical images mixed in (CT/MRI). These images are scattered throughout the book at strategic places and highly complement the material being presented. It is actually a translation (and possibly relabeling) of a German anatomy atlas. The images are top-rate and finely detailed. It is hands down one of the best atlases I have seen. I was trained on the Netter series, and I like this one much better. I especially like that this book includes tract diagrams for the neuroanatomy section, something often missing from anatomy atlases. Even though the pictures are drawings as opposed to photographs, I feel that learning anatomy on idealized drawings is better than from pictures, where you are relying on the care of the prosection and the quality of the specimen to show the various structures and relations. Skilled drawings are much better for learning, and this book has those.

What it isn't: This is not a textbook! This book is an atlas, so do not expect text explanations. If you are looking for a good anatomy textbook, I would try Moore and Dalley's "Clinically Oriented Anatomy".

The weaknesses (why it earned only 4 stars): One of the weak points in the book is the labeling of structures. Focusing on the neuroanatomy section, which is my particular specialty, some of the labels mix terms or use archaic terms not commonly used anymore. For example, when labeling the brainstem, the different parts of the brainstem in the same figure are labeled with a mix of developmental and structural terms (for example: the midbrain is labeled by its developmental name, the mesencephalon, but the medulla is labeled the medulla oblongata. The developmental term for the medulla is the myelencephalon). Also, sometimes the spinal cord is labeled the "cord" and others it is the "spinal cord". When a student is learning anatomy for the first time, it is important for consistency in labeling or, if you are going to mix terms, make it clear what those terms are. Someone just learning anatomy may not realize that the midbrain and the mesencephalon are the same structure. Also, refraining from using more obscure labels is preferred. However, for someone who already knows anatomy and can easily pick out these differences, the atlas is top rate.

My qualifications: I am a Professor who has been teaching first year medical students at an Ivy League school and a state school for over 14 years and I have published several textbook. I am constantly on the lookout for good atlases, especially for Neuroanatomy.

About the Author

Gordon M. Shepherd is professor of neurobiology at the Yale School of Medicine and former editor in chief of the Journal of Neuroscience. He has made fundamental contributions to the study of brain microcircuits, as summarized in his highly regarded edited reference work The Synaptic Organization of the Brain. His current research focuses on olfaction at the level of microcircuits and how they construct the spatial patterns of smell, which are essential to the perception of flavor.

Thought-provoking

What are flavours, how are they created, how do they impact us and does it matter? These are the key questions addressed by neuroscientist Gordon M. Shepherd in this quite unusual, interesting book.

At first glance you may feel this is a fairly typical academic tome, full of top-notch information but barely accessible to the average reader. In this case you would be mistaken. Here the author has managed to create a book that is both accessible but not "dumbed down". You don't need a science degree to enjoy this book but, of course, should you be using it in the course of study you will equally find it of value.

Within this book the author seeks to create a new scientific field of study and understanding - neurogastronomy - and debunk the belief that the sense of smell diminished during human evolution. Taking an opposing view, Shepherd claims that our sense of flavour is inherently stronger than previously imagined. The basics of smell are covered from its interaction in the body as well as the "physical mechanics" of how a smell is transformed or processed into a flavour. This might turn a lot of conventional thinking on its head as we are led to believe, or think, that vanilla surely has the same taste to man as it might have to an animal. Once you start reading about this subject and thinking about it, the potential seems almost limitless. Society generally accepts that dogs have a great sense of smell and it appears to be more acute than humans. There are reasons for that. Yet how many people really know that there are many structural, physiological differences. Both noses smell things. Both brains process things, yet the processing "algorithm", for want of a better word, is different. There must be reasons for this.

The concepts raised by the author can also explain how flavouring intensity can vary tremendously between people. One could further postulate that different cultures and influences can change the nature and form of the smell/flavour interface.

Essentially the book is split into four major parts: noses and smells, making pictures of smells, creating flavour and why it (the overall theme of the book) matters. Within this each small chapter builds upon the knowledge learned and expressed so you can get a quite good, general understanding of this potentially very complex, developed theme. Each chapter is, in itself, quite short and to the point, which probably is an attraction and oddity in its own right (within academic works). There is a lot to say for this style of modular, nugget-sized learning, particularly when the material itself has not been watered down.

It is certainly a thought-provoking read, even if for many it is unlikely to be of practical, actionable interest for the average reader. But need that be a bad thing? Sometimes it is great to just get knowledge for knowledge's sake. With this book you get that in spades and get to read a work that has the potential for breaking new ground and developing a whole new direction of study.

This reviewer cautiously suggests that you need not have a specific scientific or culinary background to enjoy this book. Even as a 'general reader' it has a lot to offer, even if some of the more detailed material is skipped over. On a scientific level, no comment is possibly, but it certainly appears to provide a conclusive argument. The end of the book is rounded off with the usual extensive notes, bibliography and index that need no further explanation.

Inflated Title and Poorly Written

After the decent introduction this book plummets into the black hole of bad science writing. Nothing can save it because Shepherd doesn't really have anything new or cohesive to say about psychology and flavor. Lots of big names are tossed around (McGee, Beauchamp, Wrangham, Sclafani, etc.), but this just makes him and his research feel shallow. A quick look at the puny bibliography shows how little effort Shepherd put into the book.
Strangely, reviewers haven't commented on the bad writing, but they have said the book is "a dense read." This didn't turn me off from the book because I don't mind dense reads if the material is necessarily dense. But this book is needlessly dense. Here's a quick example of a sentence:

"Just as the muscles of the nostril manipulate the inhalation of air, so are they coordinated to direct the air streams into the snout." (23)

What? Why is this written as a parallel sentence? Instead of nostril muscles "manipulating the inhalation of air," can they just breathe in or sniff instead? Are they "coordinated to direct the air streams," or do they just direct the air streams? The book is made up of these sentences, and together with the name dropping, the result is a rambling 200-page lecture given by a pretentious Yale professor. Even more pretentious than Herve This, because although both authors baptize a new field, at least This was French and poorly translated.

Should be entitled, "Neurological Reactions of Olfaction During Gestation."

I thought this book would have applicable advice, technique and method. This is really a book on olfaction and the neurological reaction to different stimuli. After reading this book if feel I have only learned vocabulary. Although it is drawn out over 27 chapters, this book doesn't cover much that is not rudimentarily understood by watching a toddler plug there nose while eating brussel sprouts. The author is constantly referencing other chapters of this book when a simple one or two line explanation would suffice. He is also not shy on shamelessly mentioning even the smallest role in other scientists studies. Personally, I feel this book could have been a quarter the length and maintained the same amount of pertinent information.

Can I have amnesia Rafe back? PLEASE?

Vagrant picks up six months after Fervent ended, and Rafe is back to claim Alex once and for all.

If I’m to be completely honest, I was expecting a lot more from the final book in the Series. I had enjoyed everything, for the most part, up to this point. I was thrilled that Rafe got his memories back at the end of the last book, but if I would have known what to expect because of it then I would have been singing a different tune.

Rafe always had dark desires. He was always controlling. But I felt that he took EVERYTHING to the extreme here and I missed the Rafe that had amnesia. He claimed to love Alex, but I couldn’t see it. Not really. Toward the end there were some moments of connecting, but everything else he did made me feel like she was a thing, and not a person. And with as much as she had been through, I was hoping to see him change just a little. Not get worse.

Alex, on the other hand, grew a lot in the six months apart. She had more of a backbone. Was more defiant. And there were a few scenes that made me so damn proud of her. I just wish she was strong enough to let go of Rafe. I’m telling you, this book really made me not like him.

In the end, I’d have to give Vagrant 3 stars. For this being the end of the series, I sure was left with a lot of questions. Primarily what happened to Jax? Did he take care of their problem, or do Rafe and Alex still have people searching for them? I felt that these questions should have been answered before closing the story. It was a quick read, and I did enjoy parts of it. But other parts left me feeling a bit … empty.

A DEFINITE MUST-READ!!!

I absolutely loved this book! Vagrant is a story of two broken people searching for the impossible... love. Gemma James has given her readers what they want and so much more. There's an awesome mix of emotions... angst, heartbreak, need, want, pain, turmoil, lust, and love. Vagrant is intense, painful, raw, gritty, heartbreaking, dark, emotional, captivating... it was everything! If you are a fan of dark romance with graphic violence, sex, explicit language, the Condemned series is for you.

This was not the conclusion that I expected. Lot of questions unanswered. It felt like Rafe treated Alex as a possession then someone he truly loved. After all the trauma she has been through she still loves her brother Zach enough to let him go and tells him to stay away and he does ? If it was that simple why going through all this crisis. Seriously !!! Rafe and Alex move on and what just exist ? No conclusion. I really am dissapointed!

the illustrations don't really match up with the text

This illustrated edition of the Lord's prayer has some strengths. The font is large and the illustrations are nice as far as they go. At the end of the book, a paraphrase of each verse of the prayer is found, which kids would be able to understand.

The main problem is that for the most part, the illustrations do not really illuminate the text. "Hallowed be thy name" is accompanied by a picture of a baby. "Thy will be done" is on the same page as a kid drawing with chalk. The only place where the two make sense is "Give us this day our daily bread," which accompanies a girl feeding birds some seeds.

Rick Warren's contribution is just a couple of paragraphs.

You really can't go wrong with any book that includes some words of Jesus, but more relevant pictures would have been nicer.

Theologically Lacking

I don't have direct quotes because I don't have the book in front of me. It was used as part of a devotional chapel service at my child's school. I was very disappointed that the theology was lacking. By that, I mean that every place where the Lord is being exalted Scripturally, the author turned the words into human-focused statements. Like another review stated, the illustration about "Thy Kingdom Come" (for example) was not about the King. Sad that a book with so much potential and nice drawings would be so theologically eschew. I give it two stars not because of the artwork or the page breaks or for any other aesthetic preference. Rather, I want a children's book that talks about the Lord's prayer to talk more about the Lord than about the humans praying the prayer. I believe certain theological concepts and Scriptural passages can be simplified for children without compromising theological integrity.

A prayer we can all learn from

When the disciples asked, "Lord, teach us to pray," Jesus did not simply tell them. He showed them. He modeled for all of us how we can talk to God in words that are simple yet profound. This prayer, known as "The Lord's Prayer," has endured for two thousands years, and is now available with colorful images for a new generation to discover. I read this book tonight to our 3-yr old daughter and 5-yr old son. We all enjoyed looking at the artwork and discussing the meaning of Jesus' precious words.

The Lord's Prayer introduces us to all the important elements of prayer: Adoration. Submission. Supplication. Confession. A longing for heaven. This kids' edition pairs the poetic beauty of the King James Version with the beautiful artwork of Richard Watson. Watson creatively depicts the wonder and almost whimsical nature of prayer through the trusting eyes of a child. At times, I would like to see a clearer connection between the illustrations and the content of Scripture. Some of the images are brilliant (a girl feeding sparrows to show how God supplies our daily bread), while others are just too abstract (two children walking hand-in-hand up a stairway to show God's eternal glory).

By depicting children from many countries, Watson gives the book a multicultural flavor and shows that God invites people of all ages and nationalities to talk to Him through His Son. The brief prayers and explanatory notes by Rick Warren at the back of the book are a great addition, and can provide great talking points for parents. All in all, a good tool to help introduce children to the power and beauty of the Lord's prayer.
