About the Author

Ignore the negative reviews - it's worth a few bucks to judge for yourself

Let me start by saying I have been an Amazon customer for twenty years and I have *never* reviewed anything before. But I consider this book to important for me to keep my mouth shut. It was a life-changer for me. Don't know why some reviewers are saying it is not helpful for people with severe depression - maybe some people with severe depression need a different approach, but let me speak for the rest of us. I was having suicidal thoughts, and on the highest doses of meds available. I was also in therapy. I tried two different therapists, both of whom wanted to talk about other people in my life - my parents, my husband, etc. - which was not helping me at all. I was at my wit's end, really scared that I was going to hurt myself if things didn't get better soon, when a friend recommended this book. You have to do the exercises - yes, they seem silly, but if they work, who the heck cares? Get a nice little notebook and a pen that you enjoy writing with. I made mine a sort of journal that I doodled in and added little inspirational quotes here and there. And yes, it is deceptively simple. Again, who cares? If standing on my head and whistling "Dixie" would have made me feel this much better, I'd be doing that, too. I started reading the book a month ago. I do not do all the excercises, but I did try all of them. I do what works for me. It's also true that there is the usual filler crap that you get in self-help books "Janet is a 40-year old dental assistant who came to me in 2005 suffering from..." blah, blah, blah. Just skip it. My depression is so much better that I am shocked. I am no longer thinking about suicide, and I am actually able to picture a future that is not completely empty and black. A future!!!!!! I have not had a future in years! I can't express what that means to me, but if you have depression, I don't have to. Try the book. If it doesn't work, I hope you will try something else, and keep on trying. You are not alone, and you deserve to be happy.

Feeling worse - DO NOT READ THIS BOOK EXPECTING TO FEEL BETTER!!!

If there were a way to give this book zero stars I would. I cannot believe that anyone would EVER give this a positive review. For the first part of the book this "doctor" talks about how great CBT it, how great he is for helping to develop it, and how it will help everyone. I kept putting off reading the rest because his ego was so off-putting. Then I finally decided to actually read the book. WHAT A JOKE! The basic underlying message of this book is that none of your feelings are valid, everyone else is right no matter what they say, put aside your opinions or feelings & agree with them no matter what they do to you.

Actual quote from the book "there has never been a single time in your life when the critical comments of some other person upset you - even to a small extent. No matter how vicious, heartless, or cruel these comments may be they have no power to disturb you or to create even a little bit of discomfort". This is a straight up lie. The psychological effects of verbal abuse have been found to include fear, anxiety, depression, stress, PTSD, intrusive memories, memory gap disorders, sleep & eating problems, hyper-vigilance, exaggerated startle responses, irritability, anger issues, substance abuse, self-mutilation, aggressive behavior, and suicide.

The authors advice to you is that when someone calls you a worthless piece of &#^$ you need to empathize with that person, ask them questions to further clarify exactly what makes you a worthless piece of &#^$, then find something with which to agree with them on that makes you a worthless piece of &#^$. Seriously! For every situation in life he also directs you to create a column chart. Nobody has the time to do this without disrupting their lives multiple times every day.

He gives some examples of his advice to patients. A woman's husband has cheated on her with his secretary & continued to do so for 8 months even after she found out. She naturally was upset about this as most people in a committed relationship would be. He tells her that she needs to see things from his point of view & realize that he was in a can't win situation. He loved his wife & his secretary, plus she was so attractive. Basically he's really the victim in this situation and there is no reason for her to be upset. She just needs to adjust all of her thoughts & see things his way. I can't even believe that someone would publish this as a self-help book, except as a joke. The rest of the book goes on the same & it is sickening. This guy is a misogynist with no understanding whatsoever of anxiety & depression. Anyone implementing the advice in this book would only cause themselves more harm unless they were lobotomized in order to have no feelings whatsoever. Please do not give this author any more money by wasting your dollars on this horrendous, harmful book.

YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!!!

This book is awesome. It makes sense, and is written in understandable, everyday language. The exercises are specific and helpful (except for the "clicker" recommendation. It's not that wearing a clicker to give yourself credit for positive outcomes is a bad idea, it's just that you would need clickers from shoulder to wrist to follow Dr. Burns' advice to the letter. That's a very nit-picky point about a life-changing manual, though.) Anyway, this book has given me a totally different perspective on life and the problems it contains, and I'm deeply, deeply grateful to Dr. Burns for the improvement he has made in my life. If I had access to a competent cognitive behavioral therapist I think I could escape depression entirely, but this book has made a huge dent in my mood and personality disorders and I highly recommend it.

Where has this book been all my life?

So, I must admit. This book is nothing like what I expected when I ordered it. Having a background in engineering, many statistics classes (some graduate level), and experience with other types of "networks," I was expecting a fairly tough book filled with theorems, equations, and trivial first-principle examples.

Was I ever wrong. Instead, this book discusses Bruce Willis blowing up a meteor, game shows, the author sleeping too long and missing work, and scenarios in Agatha Christie novels. In my stuffy statistics classes, Bayesian statistics was explained as something not short of gnosticism - that if you didn't get it already, it was not worth explaining. I used Bayes' Theorem for simple problems, but for nothing very practical - practical implementation was too difficult.

It is a sign that someone knows a complex subject very well: Explain it simply enough (and still be correct) so that a bright grade-school child would understand. This is exactly that the authors have done. The appealing and simple approach to this book hides the fact that they to an amazingly good job at explaining Bayesian statistics. The light subjects I mentioned in the paragraph above should be taken that these authors do a tremendous job at explaining themselves, not that this book is a pushover, or is simple or pedestrian.

If you, like me, have always wished that someone would have taken the time to explain Bayesian statistics to you, or if you are somewhat experienced in statistics but feel like you need more (or see the holes that these authors point out), then this book is for you. If you are looking for a book filled with proofs and theorems, or if you like authors that make themselves sound smart by intimidation and shock-and-awe, then skip this book. This book is the real deal.

A comprehensive guide through probability and Bayesian networks

What I liked most about this book is how it starts off with giving a general introduction into probabilistic and causal reasoning, and then goes on into more detail on probability and, eventually, more complex mathematics, thus making it a perfect choice for both beginners and scholars of probability.

This is the textbook, which is suitable to everyone who really wants to see the Bayesian networks for the most useful tools they are. It does not just throw some abstract ideas at you, but rather builds on a series of real life examples, and provides an opportunity to actually try building some Bayesian models yourself, guiding the reader through the process.

Adding to that, the idea that this book comes with a very powerful software tool makes the offer even more appealing.

The single most important book on Bayesian methods for decision analysts

Fenton and Neil have successfully made a "crossover" book that reaches broad audiences on a topic which is too often presented in a dry and esoteric manner. It is rich with illustrations, interesting examples, debunking of common fallacies, and a passionate philosophical position on Bayesian methods vs. the "frequentist" methods common in statistics.

This book is a comprehensive treatment of Bayesian methods but focuses on the particularly powerful models that can be made when conditional probabilities are presented in networks. The authors present a complete algebra of Bayesian networks using both formal expressions and simple diagrams so that almost any reader can be comfortable with the topic. This book does not assume that the reader has even basic training in probabilistic methods (it has a chapter on the basics of probability) but it also does not compromise on substantive content. The reader seeking basic explanations will not feel excluded and the reader seeking more advanced treatments will be satisfied as well.

This is exactly the sort of rigorous thinking that needs to displace the "softer" methods more common in risk assessment and decision analysis. It is presented as an entirely practical solution for managers, not an abstract, academic exercise. The "best practices" committees for PMBOK, ISO, Cobit and managers everywhere would be well advised to read this book before inventing yet another risk assessment or decision analysis method based on fluffy scores.

About the Author
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. John Rutter's music has been widely recorded and is available on many record labels including Universal, Naxos, and Hyperion. The Cambridge Singers have recorded many of John Rutter's works on the Collegium Records label.

Vague. Considerably vague.

First review. I've bought several books recently to help improve my artwork, and to try my hand at freelancing. This book had my attention long before it was released. Needless to say, I was looking forward to this. I can't say how disappointed I am.

The good: all these artists are amazing. Their work is fantastic. There's a few step by step instructions, that typically start with silhouettes and enlarging to enhance detail. The book is printed on highly glossy paper and the print is large.

The bad: where do I start? The book is broken down in chapters. I'll pick on Carlo Arelleno. His chapter is 10 pages long. He wrote 7 paragraphs. 6 pages are full photos of his art. Dude, its gorgeous. But one paragraph devotes to his method of thought. The rest offers mere commentary of vague practices he uses that are so general, they are pathetic. Want vague? Except statement: "in the beauty and the beast design, my inspiration was Renaissance France. I used the slash and puff sleeve designs of that era." Well that's just fantastic, Carlo. But the why is nowhere to be found. What was the job? What about this job made you differ from Disney's rendition? You know, maybe if we knew what you created the $%#* for, it might give us some insight that explains why you chose Renaissance France to begin research! Much of the book discusses to research designers and fashion through out history. That's great advice! Why not tell a history major to study history? No mention of what they use. No examples. No websites. No book recommendations. No thought process. Just a book of pretty pictures, a vague sense of prioritizing each artist's first thoughts, and casual commentary of what they chose, with vague references of ideas.

In short. This book is terribly vague. Skip it.

I do appreciate the beautiful art, but it is not what I pay ...

I agree with the previous review. The description for this book was promising but it didn't deliver. I do appreciate the beautiful art, but it is not what I pay for. It is indeed a showcase of beautiful art with a few comments and thoughts but nothing else. Might use it as a source of inspiration and independently study their illustrations, something I could have done for free by visiting their websites. If you want a coffee table book, with art from these artist then go ahead, but if you want in depth instruction just forget about it.

More of an artbook rather than an instructional or education book

The book description says "this book is an in-depth look at costume design and illustration. Showcasing an educational process breaking down the problematic areas of costume design for the film, video game and animation industries".

The thing is, this book is not that in-depth, and it most certainly does not break down the process for costume design. The featured artists just talk about what they do, but they do not address the why. There's no emphasis on explaining how they research, where they find their inspiration or reference, what are different parts of the costumes and why they are added and the function they serve, etc.

The only exception is Kevin Chen who actually talks about the design, explaining the design concepts and what to think about when tackling costume design, such as dealing with porportion, cutlines, materials and functionality.

There are a few step-by-step process walkthrough, and sometimes artists have helpful pointers, but most of the time they are just too brief or vague.

Overall, this book is not very insightful for those looking to explore the concepts and ideas behind costume design. The artworks featured are great though, coming from professional artists like Constantine Sekeris the author himself, Scott Robertson, Neville Page, Jerad S. Marantz and more.

I'm quite disappointed the book went in the opposite direction from what's advertised in the book description. This is more of an artbook rather than an educational or instructional book.

For the book that it advertises itself to be, I'll probably rate it 1-2 out of 5 stars. As an artbook, I'll give it 3.5 out of 5 stars pulled down by the content.

Good introduction to the topic

An excellent introductory text.. While it won't replace formal, traditional, approaches to the subject this is near perfect if you're looking for a quick overview covering key algorithms, Big-O notation and its implications for various approaches, low-math and minimal jargon, and a bit of fun. The illustrations and diagrams are hand-drawn and well-suited to the content style (as well as being clear and simple to follow). If you're looking for a formal introduction or an academic approach this isn't the book for you but it gets the job done as a solid introductory text. I try to keep up with books on a variety of CS/Dev subjects both for myself and to check out new texts for others; this one I'll be highly recommending.

Let's hope the author keeps this up with a "Grokking" series covering other CS/Dev topics.

BTW, the book includes an insert with a code for a free e-book version. I overlooked that on first reading; it's a nice addition if you want to add a portable electronic copy for quick reference.

Visual learners start here

I'm not big on rating things, but I had to for this amazing book. This is by far the best introduction to algorithms out there, especially if you have not encountered them before. If you're a dev new to coding from some other field and lack a CS background, start here. If you are a VISUAL LEARNER, start here. If you like light, easy text to get acquainted with an idea, start here. If you want to learn the basics and learn them well, start here. After you read this book you'll be ready for the more dense ones.

Light-hearted and enjoyable intro to a tough topic - but watch out for code bugs!

Very enjoyable, light-hearted overview of a central (and often very dry) topic in computer science. The author's enthusiasm shines through, and helps to motivate the reader as well. I believe there are some minor bugs here and there, however, in the Python source code. For example, in the binary search source code early in the book (on page 9, I believe), the calculation of the variable "mid" neglects to divide the sum of "high" and "low" by 2 - readers would do well to keep their eyes open to this when actually entering the source code into their machines! Overall, though, a great way to get an introduction to an important topic.

Dr. Jason Fung earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto, where he also completed his internal medicine residency before heading to UCLA for a fellowship in nephrology (a branch of medicine concerned with the kidneys). He currently practices as a kidney specialist in Toronto.

During the course of treating thousands of patients, it became clear to Dr. Fung that the epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity was getting worse. The prevailing dietary recommendations for reducing dietary fat and calories were clearly ineffective. In response, he founded the Intensive Dietary Management program (intensivedietarymanagement.com) to provide a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity that promotes simple yet effective dietary changes rather than focusing on medications.

Moore Fung? Yes, Please!

Not too little, not too much, just right. All the information I ever wanted or needed to know about fasting in one easily accessible format. And yes, I've had the book less than a day, and have only been reading for several hours, but I'm already familiar with the practice of non-religious fasting as briefly outlined in Dr. Fung's The Obesity Code, and I can see that this new book fills in all the gaps. I currently practice a daily intermittent fasting routine with a 16 hour fast, and an 8 hour feeding window. Does it work? Absolutely! I'm 69, female, and my current A1C is 4.3, my labs are all within normal limits, I take no daily medications, and I've lost 33 pounds. These are important numbers for those of us who view fasting as a journey to better health, and the accompanying weight loss as a most serendipitous side effect. Now I'm ready to ramp up my game and The Complete Guide to Fasting is just the ticket.

The fasting book I've been waiting for

Dr. Jason Fung's book The Obesity Code changed my life by answering my main question: why won't the weight stay off? Every time I'd lost weight, no matter how I'd gone about it, I eventually hit a wall and stalled, then gradually gained everything back. His insulin resistance theory of obesity made perfect sense. I'm prediabetic, so reducing my blood sugar has been a concern anyway. The Obesity Code (re)introduced the idea of fasting for health to me, and gave me enough info to start, but I wanted more.

Dr. Fung's blog at his Intensive Dietary Management clinic and his videos on the Diet Doctor provided more information about fasting, and this new book incorporates a lot of that material. But it is more than just a rehash of the blog posts. The Complete Guide to Fasting is well organized, and expands on the topics he's been writing about the last few years, providing detailed practical advice for safely getting started with fasting, from intermittent (as few as twelve hours) to extended (1+ weeks). The book features comments from other fasting advocates, and stories from people whose lives have been bettered by therapeutic fasting. You'll get the historical background, cultural traditions, and methods of fasting. You'll get a buffet of fasting options that can include some calories, and the pros and cons of each. You'll even get some recipes, because a book on fasting also spends some pages explaining how to maximize your results between fasts, and that means eating healthy and satisfying food.

There are approaches to fasting that you may learn about elsewhere - just do a YouTube search. The advice here is targeted to improving your health, particularly regarding metabolic disorders (obesity, diabetes). He doesn't overinflate his claims; some claim fasting can cure a wide variety of ailments, but he sticks to what he both knows, and prescribes to his patients, and has documented their success.

Some people may claim that fasting is crazy talk. And for some it might be: he notes who should not fast, and who should be very cautious about it. He urges working with a medical professional if you have certain conditions, take certain medications, are of a certain age, and so on. This is a sober and cautious book.

I've personally done 5-7 day fasts based on Dr. Fung's approach, and did so safely. I've seen the benefits in action. I recommend this book.

Practical Guide on How to Combine Low Carb with Fasting

How often you eat matters--or more precisely, how long you can go between eating (without feeling bad) matters. That's one of the key concepts this book brings to the ongoing healthy eating discussion. It's not about starving yourself thinner. It's about paying attention to one of the least discussed components of our diets, the WHEN. It turns out there are hormonal benefits to going for relatively long periods between meals. You don't even have to fast for a whole day to begin to experience these benefits. Just skipping lunch is a great way to get started.

I think it's important to point out that this book is not just about fasting. It's also about the benefits of a low carb diet in general. It's going to be a lot easier to skip a meal or two if your body can readily dip into its fat stores. If it cannot, that's a real problem. For one thing, you get hungry more than you should and that makes it almost impossible to sustain a healthy weight. So the baseline or background diet upon which Dr. Fung--and all of the other doctors I know who are using some form of fasting to help their patients--is not the standard American diet that calls for 45-65% of calories coming from carb (a whopping 900-1200 on a 2000Kcal diet). It's a low carb diet that contains plenty of natural fat, including animal fat, because among its many other benefits to health controlling carbs and including natural fats helps most people with out of control hunger improve their appetite regulation systems.

Jimmy Moore does a fantastic job of reminding me, as a doc, something I need to forever keep in mind: in general, patients who want to lose a lot of weight have a very special relationship with food and fasting seems like a completely whacko concept, especially if you've never looked into it. I love the honesty and the down-to-earth language he brings. And Dr. Fung is pretty much the kung fu master of reframing arguments in a logical, clear way. If you've never read about the benefits of low carb, the flaws with the calories-in-calories-out approach to dieting, or insulin resistance, you'll come away with a really good understanding of these essential concepts.
