Suspense and chemistry galore

Charlotte has been a widow for just over a year, but still dreams about the anonymous partner who she gave her virginity to on the eve of Kirk's proposal, as it was the most erotic night of her life. Suddenly the guy that just moved in next door has her interest piqued. He bears a striking resemblance to the nameless man she still fantasizes about. Soon, she realizes that he's the man she was with, and his name is Joe. What she doesn't know is that he's a detective forced to live in the small Ohio town in the witness protection program due to upcoming testimony against a drug lord. And he knows exactly who this suburban mom is and the passion she's capable of. Despite wanting to get the heck out of there, Joe starts spying on Charlotte, and becomes intrigued with her once again. Soon they are getting horizontal and he is becoming an integral part of her life. But he fears that the drug lord, Guzman may try to get at him by hurting Charlotte or her children.

There is some great nail biting moments and all the requisite steamy encounters you come to expect from a Donovan book. This one also has lot of heart with Charlotte's devotion to her family.

Decent romance with a bit of adventure thrown in

This was my first Susan Donovan book, and I think I'll try some more. She writes hot love scenes and good characters, and the story never dragged. This particular book didn't make me say "Wow!" but based on the way Donovan develops her characters and the way she writes both romance and adventure, I think I'd probably like some of her other books.
I liked that the main characters are in their mid to late 30's and still hot. And even though Charlotte is a soccer mom, it doesn't mean she can't be a very sexual being. Joe is a little too good to be true, but all leading men in romance novels are. The secondary story about Joe being in hiding from killers helped what could have been a fairly dull romance.
I recommend this book to women who like more than just romance, they like some adventure thrown in.

"Affection" Sizzles!

'Public Displays of Affection' was actually my first Susan Donovan novel, but soon after reading the last page, I rushed to add 2 older titles to my Amazon cart!

I thought this book was wonderful from beginning to end. The characters were easy to like and our hero, Joe Bellacera is almost impossible not to fall in love with. Charlotte, a widowed mom of 2 can't forget the fantasy man she spent one unforgettable afternoon with, and when he turns out to be - literally- the guy next door, the memories he sparks only prove how much she missed during her happy; yet tame sex life with her rather dull late hubby. The erotic poetry she secretly writes is her only link to the man shes forced to relegate to her fantasies until he drops into her life out of the blue, bigger badder and better looking than ever. The only damper is the $1 million price on his head, leveled by a drug lord DEA agent Joe is set to testify against - provided he lives!

Joe and Charlotte have sizzling chemistry, and their romantic moments, both past and present, pepper the book at good intervals. The sex is certainly hot and steamy and Joe and Charlotte make a perfect romantic duo. Ms. Donovan has done a hell of a job. This is definately one that will be re-read!

Not happy with the Kindle version.

I was happy to see a Christmas Real Book with contemporary christmas songs but I'm sorely disapointed at the Kindle version. They didn't bother to format it for Kindle. So I basically have a book with tons of half even quarter pages. A song that should be one page long is 4 half pages long. That's especially inconvenient if your actually using this book to read music as your playing because you have to turn it every 4 staves. Very upset and I'm going to see if I can get my money back for it. If you're a musician reading this book to perform, even just practice, Don't Buy It for Kindle! Just wait for a physical copy to come in the mail.

Lyrics are too small when used in Kindle app on an iPad Retina Display

I'm a working musician and have used the RealBook series for many years when I play requests of Standards that I might not have memorized yet. The RealBooks have transferred very well to the iPad format. I display them in PDF and have no difficulty seeing the melody lines and chord symbols.

The problem for me in The Real Christmas Book C Edition is the small size of the lyrics. They were absolutely unreadable from within the Kindle app on my iPad. No amount of tweaking with the Kindle apps settings helped in any way. I don't know if they would have been any more legible had instead bought the book through Apple's iBooks.

The solution that I came up involved six time consuming steps: First, open The Real Christmas Book C Edition within the Kindle app on my MacBookPro laptop. Second, use the Kindle apps display controls to make the music and lyrics larger while still having as much of the song display on one page if possible. Third, use the Screen Capture feature of Mac OSX to select the music and lyrics of each page while leaving out the overly large border surrounding the music staff. Fourth, convert and rename the resulting tiff file into a PDF document using Preview (in some cases had to create a multi page PDF doc from individual tiff files). Fifth, place the resulting PDFs into DropBox. Sixth, open the PDFs in DropBox on my iPad and re-open them into GoodReader the app that I use to organize and display music charts, and lyrics on my iPad.

This was very time consuming and if some thought had been given to the end user of this product, would have been unnecessary! I was able to process 13 songs total from this book to a readable state to use in performances during the Christmas season before running out of time. This worked out alright since I already have a large collection of holiday songs that are music only (no lyrics) to help fill up a gig. Plus there are many songs that I already know both the words and music to, so I don't need to look at the iPad at all.

Before next year's Christmas season comes around, I'll sit down and go through my six step process again in the hopes of adding to my library of Christmas songs where I can comfortably read both the music and the lyrics.

As a side note, the melody lines and chord changes in this book were very good and in some cases really hip, giving the player the opportunity to perform many of these tunes in a slightly jazzier style if desired.

Love the book

Love the book!!!
It was delivered without delay and I've had nothing but enjoyment playing the Christmas classics I love the most.
This book in my opinion is a classic and a must have for any piano player of any age or experience level who enjoys The sounds if Christmas.
I've been playing since I'm 21; I'm now 52 and will continue for years to practice using this book!

I found this book to be exceptional for its topic of leadership. As a grandma and having studied every parenting book I could get my hands on (though not all that there are) I would highly recommend it to parents who want to teach leadership principles to their children...it is a great book to read for conversation with your family. We need a world full of people who understand what leadership is and live it! This will protect our freedoms and lead us into fabulous and continued growth and enlightenment as individuals, as a species, and as children of God.

Strikes Gold

"Driving Miss Daisy" won the Pulitzer Prize and hooks you from the first speech. Miss Daisy is such a salty old lady who says exactly what she thinks without apology. I've seen Morgan Freeman's film performance as Hoke and can only imagine how good he must have been on stage in this character. Hoke who comes to be Miss Daisy's driver when she wrecks the car by backing into the neighbor's garage -- sideways -- is so calm. He never talks back to Miss Daisy, but he speaks his mind and then accepts whatever absurd opinion she presents.

The theme seems to be most highlighted in the sequence when they are caught in a traffic jam and realize that the local synagogue which Miss Daisy attends has been bombed. We realize that both Jews and Blacks were targets of Southern hatred; and they then share a subtle but common bond which registers despite Daisy's denials. When Daisy becomes stricken with dementia as she imagines she must find graded papers for her students when she has long been retired, it results in her heading to the nursing home. As the play progresses in a series of scenes, the characters age, winding up with Daisy in a nursing home at age 97 visited by an 85 year-old Hoke who is driven to the visit by Daisy's son Boolie. The play ends with Hoke feeding Daisy a piece of pumpkin pie.

"Driving Miss Daisy" is an excellent character piece. Alfred Uhry was about to give up writing when Daisy struck gold for him. It is an entrancing evening's entertainment both on the page and on the stage. Enjoy!

A True American Classic

DRIVING MISS DAISY is the first of three plays writer Alfred Uhry wrote about the Jews living in 20th Century Atlanta. The play opened Off-Broadway with Dana Ivey as Miss Daisy and Morgan Freeman as her chauffeur Hoke--and proceeded to run an astonishing one thousand, one hundred ninety five performances, something unheard of for an Off-Broadway show, particularly a non-musical. In 1989 the play was translated to the screen, with Jessica Tandy as Miss Daisy and Freeman reprising his role as Hoke. The film was extremely popular with both critics and the public, received nine Academy Award nominations and won four: Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Makeup, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The play has remained extremely popular. In addition to a much lauded New York revival, the play has had two runs in London and remains a staple of regional, university, and community theatre.

Miss Daisy is an elderly but sharp Jewish woman residing in Atlanta of the segregated south of the late 1940s. After one car wreck too many, her son Boolie insists that she have a chauffeur and hires Hoke for the job--but Miss Daisy rejects this. For one thing, she is--as were many people of her era and class--prejudiced against black people; for another, she perceives in Hoke the end of her autonomy due to her own advancing age. But Hoke is equal to Miss Daisy. He eventually traps her into allowing him to drive for her when he notes that the money Miss Daisy's son has spent to hire him is going to waste. Miss Daisy is inevitably cranky; Hoke is inevitably careful to know his place; but as time passes a cautious sort of friendship springs up between them. Miss Daisy will ultimately recant her covert prejudices, Hoke will ultimately speak out frankly to her. But time passes. The characters--especially Miss Daisy, who prides herself on independence--experience the tragedy of growing older, and by the early 1970s, with Miss Daisy's mind failing, she at last realizes an unexpected fact: over the years Hoke has become her best friend.

The play is performed in a series of quick blackout sketches that move across the decades with great speed but which nonetheless give a glimse into the temper of the times: Hoke is of a generation when blacks were not taught to read; in an act of prejudice Miss Daisy's Temple is bombed, causing Hoke to remember a lynching seen in his childhood; Miss Daisy becomes enthusiastic about Martin Luther King while her son Boolie dare not show support because of the business it would cost him. The play is generally thought of as a comedy, but while it is indeed quite funny, in truth it is a portrait of a changing society and ultimately ends on bittersweet, even tragic note. There is seldom a dry eye in the house whenever it is performed.

Whenever I review a play I like to point out that plays are not really intended to be read: they are intended to be seen live on stage, and it is often difficult for the layman to read a play and grasp how it works when it is on the stage. DRIVING MISS DAISY reads very well, but at the same time people who aren't experienced at reading playscripts may find the way in which the scenes shift a bit difficult to follow on the page. Nonetheless, this is a beautiful, simple play about fundamental issues, and--whether you see it or read it--strongly recommended.

A Beautiful Play

"Driving Miss Daisy" is a play that shows how somebody can overcome their initial reactions towards a situation and how that situation changed their life forever. Thus is the story of Daisy,a Jewish woman living in Atlanta. Her son, Boolie, hires a chauffer to drive her around the city. Hoke, an african american man that Daisy wants to have no relation with, gets the job.
Opening up in the 1950's and running all the way to 1975, this story tells of the growing friendship between Daisy and Hoke. For the first few years Daisy is embarassed to being driven around by a black man but they soon develop a lasting friendship that will last forever.
"Driving Miss Daisy" tells one thing. It tells about changes in people. Daisy was a Jewish women who wanted absolutely no part with Hoke. Throughout the play Alfred Uhry is able to develop on each character from Daisy and Hoke, to the maid Idella, to Daisy's son Boolie, to Boolie's wife, and everybody else that appears. This is a very short play and Alfred Uhry had to have some skill to pull off the awesome character development in this.
"Driving Miss Daisy" is a story of change in people and of true friendship. This play went on Broadway and became a movie. This play won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama and four Academy Awards for the movie. I recommend this play to anybody that would enjoy a touching story of two people that were everything but friends at first who became best friends for life. Pick this play up and you will appreciate this story and the friendship that is depicted in it.

It's been 7 years since the last edition of The Successful Match. What are the major differences between the 2009 and 2017 editions?
The Successful Match 2017 is nearly 650 pages while the 2009 edition had approximately 400 pages. Every chapter has been updated, and new chapters have been added for U.S. citizen IMGs, osteopathic students, and couples. In the 2009 edition, specialty-specific information was presented over 1-2 pages. In this new edition, each specialty has its own chapter, and we dig deep to offer applicants incredibly detailed information and strategies tailored to the specific specialty. To bring this level of detail to our readers, we had to significantly expand the size of the book.
 Why is this book so detailed?
Matching successfully requires countless decisions. Some are small. Some are big. But they're all important. The details matter in this process. We wanted applicants to base their decisions on the available evidence. After all, we're talking about something so very important - their future. Fortunately, we have available to us considerable research in the area of residency selection, and we present this literature to give applicants the knowledge needed to make sound decisions.
