I had to buy this book for an MBA class. It was a very frustrating read. There were NUMEROUS grammatical errors - some of them were even comical (ex. using the word "entree" instead of "entry" twice on page 127)!

The writing style, sentence structure, and grammar were so bad that I had a hard time focusing on the content. I would be embarrassed if I were the publisher - John Wiley & Sons.

I would strongly not recommend this book.

The writing in this book is awful for a textbook. The book is also full of more opinions rather than fact and research. I agree with the previous post, the grammar is atrocious and it was hard to concentrate on the content that was there to find.

About the Author
Malcolm Lyons, sometime Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge and a life Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge, is a specialist in the field of classical Arabic literature. His published works include the biography Saladin, the Politics of the Holy War, The Arabian Epic, Identification and Identity in Classical Arabic Poetry and many articles on Arabic literature.

Ursula Lyons, formerly an Affiliated Lecturer at the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Cambridge University and, since 1976, an Emeritus Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, specialises in modern Arabic literature.

"I Found It" -- the Best Arabian Night's Set Available!

I have been searching for a "Complete" 1001 Night Tales or The Arabian Nights for some years and have read the Josepah Campbell edited version, Payne, Burton, Scott, Haddawy versions... but this is my Favorite because a) it includes all the Stories found in the French Edition by Galland and b) the Complete Tales that are found in the extensive versions or translations for the most part.

I am Grateful to the Lyons for doing all this Work (husband & wife), and for making it available to us. This is the Edition I would use for high school, college as well as "fun" Reading. I perhaps would also use it, given that I am the moderator, with teenagers or children who are rather bright.

I have only Positive things to say and I am Grateful it is available in 3 Volumes by Penguin Books for this outstanding price. Again, I have been researching this Material for some time and now I can finally say there is a Complete Set available that is Modern, "Complete", easy to read and understand, contains the Poems, and Flows nicely with every Night accounted for until It reaches 1001 Nights! Beautiful!

Lyons translation, vol. 2 of 3

This is volume two of an excellent translation by Malcolm Lyons of the full thousand-and-one-night Arabic manuscript, compiled in Egypt and known in the West as the Macnaghten edition or Calcutta II. All three volumes have introductory essays by Robert Irwin, author of _The Arabian Nights - A Companion_ (also a very interesting and accessible must-have for readers of the _Arabian Nights_). Irwin's volume two essay provides an entertaining and informative overview of the literary history of the _Arabian Nights_, and its succinct ten pages would be useful, for instance, in a high school or college course on this classic frame story. Volume two includes nights 295 to 719. Fans of Pier Paolo Pasolini's 1974 film version, "Il fiore delle mille e una notte," will find in volume two a text version of his movie's frame story in the form of "'Ali Shar and Zumurrud" (Pasolini does not use the story of Shahrazad as his frame, and changes the name and character of 'Ali to an unsophisticated boy, Nureddin, whom Zumurrud must "educate.") The first two nested tales of the movie, read to Nureddin by Zumurrud, also can be found in written form in volume two as "Harun al-Rashid and the Lady Zubaida in the pool," and "Abu Nuwas and the three boys." (Scholars of Swahili literature will find several Abu Nuwas stories in volume two, as well the written version of Steere's 1869 "Hekaya ya Mohammadi Mtepetevu" from _Swahili Tales As Told By Natives of Zanzibar_. In volume two, it is "Abu Muhammad the sluggard," from nights 299 to 305.) The stories of "The slave girl Tawaddud," "Sindbad the sailor" (including an alternate ending), "The City of Brass," and "Dalila the wily" are also in volume two. The translation of the alternative version of Sindbad's seventh voyage, "Sindbad and the elephant graveyard," is provided by Ursula Lyons, from the French text by Antoine Galland. Her fine translations of Galland's "orphan stories" (i.e., ones not included in the Egyptian manuscript, but offered in his _Les Mille et une nuits_)--"The story of Ali Baba and the forty thieves" and "The story of Aladdin, or The Magic Lamp"--can be found in volumes one and three respectively.

The rapture continues

I feel that I am having one of the great reading experiences of my life with this new translation of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS. Volume I was mind-blowing with its kaleidoscopic variety and Volume II is even more so. There is more variation in both story structure and subject matter. One of the more interestingly structured stories tells of a king's concubine who tries to seduce the king's son. When he rebuffs her, she goes to his father and accuses him of trying to seduce her and demands that he be beheaded. The king is set to do it, but then a vizier comes forth and tells a story about the wiles of women and why the king should not believe her. The king decides against executing his son. Then the next day the disappointed concubine returns begging the king to reconsider, and tells a story to illustrate the wiles of men which convinces the king to kill his son. Then a second vizier steps forward and tells a story about the wiles of women and the king changes his mind again. And so it goes through seven viziers until the king is saved at the last minute from making a terrible mistake. Many of the stories in this volume deal with con artists and tricksters. Some of them made me really uncomfortable when it looked as though injustice would prevail. Not all the stories have happy endings. (Dalila the Trickster, who is the vilest con artist in the book, just made me angry!) This volume is even sexier than the first volume and in places gets fairly graphic, with jokes about penis size and egg white used as a substitute for another substance. As in volume I, the women tend to be lusty and the men moon over unattainable beauties. One lusty woman has a secret love affair with a bear! Both lesbianism and male homosexuality are depicted. One homosexual story is a comic tale of a young man eluding the amorous advances of an older man and another is the only positive depiction of homosexuality in the book. In that story a young man discovers that his brother is having an affair with a neighbor when he finds them asleep together, but seeing that his brother is happy, he decides to keep mum about it. One of the stories is basically an adolescent gross-out joke featuring pus and vomit. Several stories go beyond fantasy into the surreal, such as the one that features an epic battle between apes and giant ants. The same saga features a talking female snake that is rather frightening, but ends up being a very noble character. This volume contains the saga of Sinbad (two different versions), which I did not find nearly as interesting as some of the other stories. However, there is one section (between about a third and halfway through the book) that I found excruciating. It's about a young woman who is engaged in a battle of wits with multiple scholars on such subjects as anatomy and Islamic religion. Maybe that was fascinating stuff for a medieval Muslim, but for this 21st Century non-Muslim, it was a big bore. But once I got past the halfway point in the book, I zoomed through the rest of it. I recommend just scanning this section, even though I did not. This is a great work of literature in which I found fragments that reminded me of Shakespeare, The Bible, Grimm, Homer, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. I wish I had read it a long time ago and I look forward to the final volume. Five stars despite the slow section.

Like many other people have said, very superficial. I particularly like the part where she recommends using genetically altered fish for the best performance.

Male fish are more feed-efficient and generally grow bigger than female fish. There are two ways of getting all-male fish: take a random group of fish and treat them with hormones until all of them are male or genetically alter the dads so they are all YY male, guaranteeing the offspring will be XY male. After spending much of the opening railing against the Monsanto, chemical-laden frankenfoods with less nutrition (citation needed) she recommends using that exact same thing in her aquaponic system rather than letting it be all-natural and less productive. Pot, Kettle, I believe you're familiar with each other.

Covers all the basics and some!

One solid book on aquaponics. It covers all the basics and some. I do have a few problems with this mighty handbook however. Some of the information I would've organized a bit differently and I wish their was less of an unconfident tone from the author on the subject. She provides you with all the information needed for you to become confident on the subject so she should deliver it that way. I understand that there are a lot of unknowns and tricky things with aquaponics so covering everything about it is no easy feat. That being said I really have to applaud her for this amazing guide. Everything you need to know to start and manage an aquaponics system is here in this book. Have a highlighter or pen on hand to help for reference!

Good beginner book

This book is well worth the money for a beginner.

I bought this book as a beginner guide in order to get a small apartment system up and running and it has been easy to read, easy to follow, and included all the information needed to start my system.

I gave it 4/5 stars due to the second chapter which was entirely devoted to global warming and a global food crisis. There are many books on this topic and if I had wanted to read about it I would have bought a different book.

Overall it was a good book for beginners covering all pieces of the system and how each piece works.

I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about starting aquaponics but would provide a warning about the global warming chapter.

About the Author
Hooman Darabi is a Senior Technical Director and Fellow of Broadcom Corporation, California, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is an IEEE Solid State Circuits Society distinguished lecturer and his research interests include analog and RF IC design for wireless communications.

Practical knowledge for modern RF circuits and systems design

Walking down the halls of a large RFIC design company for the last decade, I notice the same few text books on the desks of most of the designers, especially recent graduates. These are excellent academic texts, but were written when CMOS RFIC design was more of a research concept. Now that we are well into the 2nd decade of the CMOS renaissance, there has been a lot of real world design experience gained.
Dr. Darabi is someone whose designs have been manufactured into CMOS RFIC's for hundreds of millions of wireless devices currently in use around the world today. His insights and advice are greatly sought out amongst peers and colleagues.
His book starts out by reviewing the fundamental equations of the electromagnetic pioneers Gauss, Faraday, Kirchhoff, Maxwell etc. With this reaffirmed foundation, the reader is led to individual chapters on modulation, filters, noise and distortion. Next come chapters dedicated to each block in the RF signal chain: LNA's, Mixers, LO's, all the way to PA's. Concluding with an RX TX transceiver architecture overview, including current packaging and production concerns.
The reader can follow the book as a whole, or skip to a specific chapter and dig in to the loads of equations, diagrams, problem solving questions and answers, as well as the many references to other books and research papers. This book is an excellent tool for someone researching design concepts, or examining their current RFIC circuits and systems designs.
Did you know flicker noise is considered Gaussian, but is Laurentzian? is it possible to design a low noise, high linearity receiver, but with a mixer as 'first' block in chain? what are some good design techniques to help prevent signal coupling within today's complex SoC's? these and many other questions are answered.

Excellent Book to Understand RF Circuit Design

I think this book is in one the up to dated and comprehensive ones in its realm. It can be useful for students and RF engineers to understand how real world transceivers and circuits work. Although, at first glance, it may seem hard to real but I suggest trying to study one topic you have read known and hive knowledge about it, and then you will find out this book gives you more insight about it and tries to give you new intuitive and engineering view to it so that you can make your knowledge deeper and apply it in real circuit design.

For example, most RF books talked about system design. However, I think this is the only new one that addresses topics like reciprocal mixing and Harmonic mixing in detail. I am sure you will find new information/methods that are practical and will help you to design/understand feasible circuits.

The book starts to build fundamentals like circuit theory, random process and etc. and then step by step goes to circuit and transceiver design. The author is well known in RFIC realm as he tried to combine his academic and industrial knowledge here to share it with you.

Finally, I suggest having it in your library because I am sure you will enjoy its reading and find new ideas!

I really like the way the author explains and approaches the concepts

I'm really liking this book. It begins with fundamentals and covers a decent amount of theory but is also practical, with intuitive explanations of things. I really like the way the author explains and approaches the concepts. Problem sets can be challenging but that's what makes it fun, right !?!? Definitely a good reference text to have in the collection.
