This book tells the story of a Dutch boy who grew up during the 1950s in post-war Borneo, where he had frequent encounters with an airplane, the Douglas DC-3, aka the C-47 Skytrain or Dakota of World War II fame. For a young boy living in a remote jungle community, the aircraft reached the proportions of a romantic icon, as the essential lifeline to a bigger world for him, the beginning of a special bond.

In 1957 his family left the island, and all its residual wreckage of World War II, and he attended college in The Hague. After graduation he started a career as a corporate executive, and met the aircraft again during business trips to the Americas. His childhood passion for the Dakota flared up anew, and the fascination pulled like a magnet. As if predestined, or maybe just looking for an alibi to come closer, he began a business to salvage and convert Dakota parts, which meant first of all finding them.

As the demand for these war relic parts and cockpits soared, he began to travel the world to track down surplus, crashed or derelict Dakotas. He ventured deeper and deeper into remote mountains, jungles, savannas and the seas where the planes are found, usually as ghostly wrecks but sometimes still in full commercial operation. In hunting the mythical Dakota he often encountered intimidating or dicey situations in countries plagued by wars or revolts, others by arms and narcotics trafficking, warlords and con men.

This book describes his multiple expeditions in search of the remains of the Dakota legend. It takes the reader to some of the remotest spots in the world, but once there one is often greeted by the comfort of what was once the West’s apex in transportation―however now haunted by the courageous airmen of the past.

Hans Wiesman takes us on an intercontinental crusade, country to country, island to island; and it’s fair to say his story could count as one of those likeable books you can pick up and put down as and when. By its very nature the story is episodic but do not take this as a criticism. The writing is assured and well paced and you can feel the enthusiasm of the author at the turn of every page. The photography is well captioned and, of course, the pix are all fascinating. Just about everyone has seen those internet snaps of Dakotas used by scuba divers and all this stuff and more is included in the author’s story. His passion is beyond doubt and his knowledge and experience in the field of seeking out aircraft could well be unrivalled. His contacts book must be huge and I presume he has to get people in to help write all his Christmas cards for him. The book finds a fitting conclusion with our man Hans helping to save the DC-3 now on display at the Merville Battery in Normandy. He gets the chance to mix Dakotas with his passion for Harleys and you cannot help but come away with the idea that this is pretty cool. In fact, if I needed to find the briefest of reviews for this book, then “pretty cool” would do it. I suspect the author would be satisfied with that if he ever finds time to slow down. About the Author
Dutchman Hans Wiesman grew up in post colonial Borneo where his father worked as an engineer for Shell Oil. Growing up in the jungle, Hans was bitten by the Dakota bug at a young age, as the leftover cargo planes from WWII were the only connection to an outside world he had ever seen. 35 years later, while working as an advertising executive, Hans ran into a Dakota during a photo shoot in South America and was immediately mesmerized again. He decided to turn his passion into a full time job and has since been scouring the most remote regions of the planet on a quest to find the last forgotten Dakotas in the world

Great adventure, highly recommended

This is a most attractive book, - nicely printed and bound and with gold-embossed lettering along the spine. More importantly, it is an exciting book. The author shares his adventurous life - and his love for the DC-3 - with us in a charming, informative and humoristic manner. A free and easy childhood on the threshold of the Borneo jungle was followed by university education in his native Netherlands and a career in the corporate world (which included several spectacular aviation related events). Eventually, he set up his own business and started tracking down, buying and converting the wingtips of defunct DC-3 aircraft into designer desks! His quest took him all over the planet and he writes hilariously about his failures and successes in developed and developing countries, trying to do business with people of all shades of honesty. The book is illustrated with a wealth of interesting colour photos. A must for anyone interested in historic aircraft, especially for fans of the 80-year old DC-3 in all its shapes and varieties.

The Dakota Hunter: In Search of the Legendary DC-3 on the Last Frontiers by Hans Wiesman is an amazing retelling of one man’s quest to pursue his dreams and passions. A must read for anyone interested in aviation, travel, history, and of course the DC-3 aka Dakota. From the very start Wiesman’s engaging autobiography takes you to another world not experienced by most. From his childhood in the wilds of post-war Borneo in the early nineteen-fifties to the far reaches of the final frontiers in the new millennium. You follow his quest and passion to find and obtain scarce Dakota wingtips. Traveling around the world he brings to life his experience. With a fantastic sense of humor, true passion for adventure, travel and the world around him you feel as if you are right there with Wiesman. You can feel his elation at seeing a Dakota no matter its condition derelict or still flying his passion comes through.

The Dakota Hunter is filled with hundreds of photos documenting the hunt and bringing even more life to the book. He ensures the reader understands the historical and often unstable political situations as he travels to destinations like Bolivia, Colombia, and Madagascar. Throughout the book you learn that for Wiesman his quest for wingtips, is his quest and passion for the Dakota. In whatever state of disrepair, the Dakota is a beautiful airplane with an amazing history that deserves to be respected and honored for its service both during peace time and war. A testament to this is the following excerpt from his trip to Thailand: “As they say, “Old soldiers never die, they simply fade away.” And that is exactly what happened with the derelict Dakotas of the Phuket Reef Squadron. They are gone forever, somewhere in the eerie depths of the Indian Ocean. Probably the best grave they could have wished for. They slipped quietly away into the abyss where no human claim nor quarrel can ever touch them again. I could not have dreamt up a better ending for these brave warriors.”

More Than A Story About A Plane

Highly entertaining and not just for DC3 fans. Mr Weisman has many interesting stories to tell about the interesting countries he has visited searching for DC3 parts. Some may see irony in the fact he only wants the parts to build office desks but there is much more to his story and his affection for the plane shines through.

Not a total success in editing but a lively piece of story telling

About the Author
Justo Miranda is the author of books and monographs on aviation since the 1980s. A widely known historian, Miranda specialises in aviation of the 1930s and is the author of two volumes on aircraft used during the Spanish Civil War. The exciting discovery of a microfilm on secret German weapons in the early 1990s drove him to publish Secret Wonder Weapons of the Third Reich, later published by Schiffer in 1996. His outstanding technical drawings of the Luft"46 projects are probably the best in their genre. Mr Miranda had a book out about German rockets and missiles a few years back which is well worth seeking out. This latest offering from Mr Miranda is yet another look at the German flying wings. The book contains numerous technical drawings and just as much writing that enlightens the reader to a deeper understanding. It's a fascinating history of fanciful ideas, some of which helped the Allies leap decades forward in flight. I will say you need to be interested in the Luft"46 genre to really get most from these books( there is a just as excellent second volume on piston fighter projects) and really enjoy them.
I bought both volumes to expand my already huge library on Luft "46 collection.
I have a feeling these books will not be around long and become extremely rare and expensive in the near future.

Another Must-Have Book For Military Aviation Enthusiasts!

'The Ultimate Flying Wings of the Luftwaffe' is the latest book by Justo Miranda published by Fonthill Media and is essentially a companion book for his critically acclaimed, 'The Ultimate Piston Fighters of the Luftwaffe.' For those unfamiliar with Justo Miranda, he is a widely known historian specializing in German military aviation and weapons systems of the 1930s-1940s. This book specializes in the flying wings, and is loaded with fascinating data and information regarding the Luftwaffe's most radical wing-based fighter and bomber projects. Profusely illustrated with technical drawings considered by many--myself included--to be the best in their genre, this latest book by Justo Miranda does not disappoint and is entirely worth the high cost in my opinion. My only criticism of the book is that there are not artist depictions of the planes as they might have appeared in the service of the Third Reich. It might have been nice to have colorized paintings of these concept planes in action over war-torn Europe, but this is just my opinion. The overleaf of this book contains an excerpt of a prescient story by H.G.Wells written in 1933 and titled, 'The Shape of Things to Come.' The inclusion of this thought-provoking excerpt by Justo Miranda is relevant in that H.G. Wells painted an astonishingly accurate picture of future military aviation and even predicted the beginning of the Second World War--give or take three months! The Nazi regime realized too late the importance and strategic value of Flying Wings and only began construction of these planes in early 1945. Thus, only one of the Horten Wing fighters was able to take to the skies in what was to be its first and last test flight. This book began with a lengthy chapter describing the emergence of what would later be coined 'stealth' technology. With respect to aviation, it began in the First World War with clever camoflage paint schemes and patterns, later evolving into the complexities of nascent radar technology which profoundly influenced aviation design during the Second World War. The book concludes with an interesting treatise of the future of the Flying Wings, many of which are being designed and implemented into the United States Air Force in the 21st century. We need only look at the latest American bombers and fighter planes to understand the far-reaching legacy of the German Horten brothers and their revolutionary designs. I enjoy reading books like this because I have an active imagination and often contemplate alternate histories. This book will not be in print indefinitely, so I highly recommend its purchase before it becomes a rarity and its price skyrockets upward. Not just for Luft '46 enthusiasts, this book has something for anyone interested in the past, present, and--yes--the future of military aviation. I am also an avid modeler and this is one of my favorite books to have as a handy reference.

with lots of excellent technical drawings

Superb, with lots of excellent technical drawings. It is amazing to me how many German manufactures understood the need for swept back wings. Heck, even the boat builders (Blohm & Voss) designed high speed aircraft. It is a good thing these flying wings were never produced in time. If I was a Billionaire, some of these would be built.

About the Author

CHRISTIE JOHN GEANKOPLIS is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. His current research interests involve transport processes, biochemical reactor engineering, mass transfer in liquid solutions, and diffusion and/or reaction in porous solids. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

The title of this text has been changed from Transport Processes and Unit Operations to Transport Processes and Separation Process Principles (Includes Unit Operations). This was done because the term "unit operations" has been largely superseded by the term "separation processes," which better reflects the modern nomenclature being used.

In this fourth edition, the main objectives and the format of the third edition remain the same. The sections on momentum transfer have been greatly expanded, especially the sections on fluidized beds, flow meters, mixing, and non-Newtonian fluids. Material has been added to the chapters on mass transfer. The chapters on absorption, distillation, and liquid-liquid extraction have also been enlarged. More new material has been added to the sections on ion exchange and crystallization. The chapter on membrane separation processes has been greatly expanded, especially for gas-membrane theory.

The field of chemical engineering involved with physical and physical-chemical changes of inorganic and organic materials and, to some extent, biological materials is overlapping more and more with the other process-engineering fields of ceramic engineering, process metallurgy, agricultural food engineering, wastewater-treatment (civil) engineering, and bioengineering. The principles of momentum, heat, and mass transport and the separation processes are widely used in these processing fields.

The principles of momentum transfer and heat transfer have been taught to all engineers. The study of mass transfer has been limited primarily to chemical engineers. However, engineers in other fields have become more interested in mass transfer in gases, liquids, and solids.

Since chemical and other engineering students must study so many topics today, a more unified introduction to the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass transfer and to the applications of separation processes is provided. In this text the principles of the transport processes are covered first, and then the separation processes (unit operations). To accomplish this, the text is divided into two main parts.

PART 1: Transport Processes: Momentum, Heat, and Mass

This part, dealing with fundamental principles, includes the following chapters: 1. Introduction to Engineering Principles and Units; 2. Principles of Momentum Transfer and Overall Balances; 3. Principles of Momentum Transfer and Applications; 4. Principles of Steady-State Heat Transfer; 5. Principles of Unsteady-State Heat Transfer; 6. Principles of Mass Transfer; and 7. Principles of Unsteady-State and Convective Mass Transfer.

PART 2: Separation Process Principles (Includes Unit Operations)

This part, dealing with applications, covers the following separation processes: 8. Evaporation; 9. Drying of Process Materials; 10. Stage and Continuous Gas-Liquid Separation

Processes (humidification, absorption); 11. Vapor-Liquid Separation Processes (distillation); 12. Liquid-Liquid and Fluid-Solid Separation Processes (adsorption, ion exchange, extraction, leaching, crystallization); 13. Membrane Separation Processes (dialysis, gas separation, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration); 14. Mechanical-Physical Separation Processes (filtration, settling, centrifugal separation, mechanical size reduction).

In Chapter 1 elementary principles of mathematical and graphical methods, laws of chemistry and physics, material balances, and heat balances are reviewed. Many readers, especially chemical engineers, may be familiar with most of these principles and may omit all or parts of this chapter.

A few topics, primarily those concerned with the processing of biological materials, may be omitted at the discretion of the reader or instructor; these include Sections 5.5, 6.4, 8.7, 9.11, and 9.12. Over 240 example or sample problems and over 550 homework problems on all topics are included in the text. Some of the homework problems involve biological systems, for those readers who are especially interested in that area.

This text may be used for a course of study following any of the following five suggested plans. In all plans, Chapter 1 may or may not be included.

1. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass and separation processes. In this plan, most of the entire text, covering the principles of the transport processes in Part 1 and the separation processes in Part 2, is covered. This plan would be applicable primarily to chemical engineering as well as to other process-engineering fields in a one-and-one-half-year course of study at the junior and/or senior level.

2. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass and selected separation processes. Only the elementary sections of Part 1 (the principles chapters—2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7) are covered, plus selected separation-processes topics in Part 2 applicable to a particular field, in a two-semester or three-quarter course. Students in environmental engineering, food process engineering, and process metallurgy could follow this plan.

3. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass. The purpose of this plan in a two-quarter or two-semester course is to obtain a basic understanding of the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass transfer. This involves studying sections of the principles chapters—2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 in Part 1—and omitting Part 2, the applied chapters on separation processes.

4. Study of separations processes. If the reader has had courses in the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass, Chapters 2-7 can be omitted and only the separation processes chapters in Part 2 studied in a one-semester or two-quarter course. This plan could be used by chemical and certain other engineers.

5. Study of mass transfer. For those such as chemical or mechanical engineers who have had momentum and heat transfer, or those who desire only a background in mass transfer in a one-quarter or one-semester course, Chapters 6, 7, and 10 would be covered. Chapters 9, 11, 12, and 13 might be covered optionally, depending on the needs of the reader.

Different schools and instructors differ on the use of computers in engineering courses. All of the equations and homework problems in this text can be solved by using ordinary hand-held computers. However, more complicated problems involving numerical integration, finite-difference calculations, steady- and unsteady-state two-dimensional diffusion and conduction, and so on, can easily be solved with a computer using spreadsheets. Almost all undergraduate students are proficient in their use.

The SI (Systeme International d'Unites) system of units has been adopted by the scientific community. Because of this, the SI system of units has been adopted in this text for use in the equations, example problems, and homework problems. However, the most important equations derived in the text are also given in a dual set of units, SI and English, when different. Many example and homework problems are also given using English units.

Good for separations techniques

The only review that I can give for the text would be for the separations sections, of which our class concentrated mainly on the distillation regime. Excellent structured pairing of chapter labeling with homework and example problems. Open-ended problems required a sufficient level of engineering skills.

Best Chemical Engineering Book I've Had

This book is by far the best and most thorough chemical engineering book we used at my university. Every chapter redefines variables it uses instead of you having to reference 8 chapters back to remember what a particular variable is. The book does a remarkable job of taking a very complicated subject and making it seem as easy as can it could possibly be. This book saved me in school and, as I said, is without a doubt the best text book we used during undergrad.

About the Author

Marc Lamy de la Chapelle received his PhD in science physics in 1998 from the University of Nantes, France, on the study of carbon nanotubes by Raman spectroscopy. After holding post-doctoral positions at the Office National d'Etude et de Recherche en Aéronautique, Paris, and at the physics department of Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, he became associate professor at the Université de technologie de Troyes, France, in 2001. His research activities focus on nanooptics and Raman spectroscopy. He has worked on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Currently, he is professor at the Paris 13 University at the Laboratory of Chemistry, Properties and Structure of the Biomaterials and Therapeutics Agents (CSPBAT UMR 7244). His research subject is the application of SERS and TERS to biological problems and, specifically, to the diagnosis of pathologies.

Annemarie Pucci has extensive experience in infrared spectroscopy of surfaces and nanostructures and is internationally known figure in the fields of infrared plasmonics, surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy, and in situ infrared monitoring of thin layer growth. Prof. Pucci has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. Currently, she is professor of experimental physics at the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg, Germany. As member of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, she is strongly involved in the master education on solid-state physics, including surface science.

It still works!

As an experiment, I decided to use this book for two weeks with the suggested music. To my amazement, it really works! I'm just 20 and so it is a huge novelty not to follow a tv screen.
In the book, Jane doesn't just address aerobics, but where society places people in life, the enviroment and healthy eating.
I now have this workout on DVD so really use the book as reference to healthy living.
You would have thought that it would be hard to follow a book to workout with. But it isn't. For every move there are professionally taken indepth photographs with descriptions.
You really use this book until you remember the moves off by heart. But it's use doesn't stop there as it is jam packed with so much information.
And the funny thing is it feels better working out in the absense of a television screen.

GREAT FITNESS BOOK FOR BODY AND LIFE

I purchased this book based on three things. One I wanted to see an example of Jane Fonda's original 1982 workout(hard to find/expensive). Two I love almost all of JF workouts. Three the one review I read confirmed I needed this for my collection. This is truly a wonderful book I can see why it was a best seller. This book offers information on a wide range of subjects from self-esteem, diet, social and enviromental issues, not to mention the two workouts. This was a great buy.

This book offers a begginer and advanced workout. Each workout begins with warm-up and ends with a cool down. At the begging of each exercise routine there is a list of music that could accompany the exercise. This can be used as a guide to choosing your own music. Both routines have an aerobics, arms, waist, abs, hips and thighs, bottocks. The workouts last about 30-45 for beginner and 40-60 mins for advanced. The cardio portion of both workouts are simple but short, however you can easily extend it.

This workout is great for the flexibility it offers. This is a workout that you can truly make your own. You could even do it while you are watching television. One of the things I really liked was making my own music to this workout. Being abel to chose your own music that you enjoy, really keeps you going. This is great if you like to make compilation tapes or cds.

Now I know what your thinking I don't go for exercise books. And for the most part I would agree, with all the page turning reading descriptions and the pictures that make no sense. But this is written and shown in a very clear manner. Over time this should just be a guide. Because you should start to memorize the workout.

This is a great workout if your short on time or you don't feel like going to the gym of even putting a exercise tape in the vcr. This workout out is total body toning. You could even use light hand weights during some of the arm movements for extra work. However some of the movements can be jarring and hard on the joints. Just modify it to fit your own personal needs. If it feels wrong don't do it. If you like this workout I would recommend Jane Fonda's New Workout Book or VHS and Jane Fonda's Women Coming of Age and Jane Fonda's Easy Going Workout.

Still a great book

I bought this book in the 80's after the birth of my son. Within 4 months, I had lost 20 lbs & was toned & trim. A few years ago, I made the stupid error of getting rid of it. I repurchased it again because the excercises remain effective and it is a killer workout. Old school for me is the way to go!

A classic on the history of the Cumberland Valley

This is my favorite book on early life along the Cumberland Valley (Middle Tennessee and lower Central Kentucky), especially after getting past Chapter One, which is an imaginary narration of an "early adventure" which seemed unnecessary. That is a small complaint though. The book has some really interesting information on all aspects of settlement of the area and I highly recommend it! Many of the details described are applicable to pioneer life in other areas east of the Mississippi as well, I would think.

I've seen this book referred to a number of times and finally got around to ordering it. I was thrilled by the wealth of detail about pioneer life. The seller was promp,t and the statement of the condition of the book was accurate. Would definitely use the seller again.
