About the Author
Barkha Dutt, one of India's most prominent journalists and television anchors, became a household name with her reporting from the front lines during the Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan in 1999. In addition to her war reporting (from countries as varied as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt and Libya), in India she has reported from the field on virtually every important national story- politics, insurgencies, social upheavals, floods and famine. She has won more than forty national and international honours for her work.

Don't buy: It's not even worth the paper it's printed on!

I wonder why the 'authoress' and publisher decided to kill so many trees for such a worthless piece of writing. Full of hearsays from various 'Ankits from IITs', unsubstantiated & planted stories, useless trivia, a whiff of megalomania and quite a bit of typos/incorrect synthesis. The narrative is as corrupt as deciding Barkha's allegiance and as evasive as Radia Tape defense.

In short even if you have money to throw down the pipe, throw it down the pipe rather then buying this book.

After watching Barkha Dutt video theatrics at NDTV and her tweets, I highly doubt her intentions and I wonder where is her original research!
Her credibility no doubt goes down the drain. I know now why Indian journalism is reeking with such star journalist with less content and more intent!

A good old school primer

In chapter 4 Michael states "(But) if your aim is a good physique with first class health and muscles that are not only big but have the strength to back up their impressive appearance, that is what this book aims to give you". And you can take that to the bank!
These two English bodybuilders from the early sixties era produced this little fool proof primer on physical development starting the beginner off with a simple but very complete training course that can take the trainie to the next level (as in Part II) or be followed as a life long exercise routine. Most exercises can be done at home with basic weights or cables (all of them in Part I can be).
The authors gives us some brief but fascinating historical tidbits and author Michael Fallon's personal testimony revealing what turned him to wt. lifting and the amazing results he obtained is both intriguing and inspiring to say the least! Punctuated with rare black&whites of American and European bodybuilders from the previous century. Mr. Saunders who covers the advanced section in Part II is also a Mr. Universe Title winner.

It's old. No, its ancient. I bought this book for 25 cents at an old school of mine and it changed my life, quite frankly. You can get it if you want to see what bodybuilding was like back then. It was the first real muscle book I read.

and the climax where the heroine faces down the bad guy was pointless and senseless

The beginning was quite strong for a romance novel but by chapter 5 it started going downhill the hero and the villain were not strong, and the climax where the heroine faces down the bad guy was pointless and senseless. The characters names as Storm and Flame seemed like names from an adults only movie. No one would have had those names in that time period.

Davo’s a pretty average guy. He has a decent job, owns his own home, and spends his weekends at the pub. He fully accepts that he’s gay, but doesn’t want to be one of those gays who are girly. Then Davo’s friend and gay idol not only gets a boyfriend, but also adopts a baby girl. Davo is seriously spooked and scuttles down to the pub. That’s where he meets Lee, cute from her cherry-red hair to her pretty little dress and pointy red shoes. Davo is charmed—but how is that possible? He’s gay. Isn’t he? Then Lee tells him he’s actually a guy—he just likes to wear women’s dresses occasionally. Thoroughly confused about an attraction that’s out of character for him, Davo begins the long journey to where he can accept himself without caring what everyone else thinks.

Another light, fun, romance from Renae Kaye.

This was another light, fun, romance from Renae Kaye. It works as a standalone, but if you’ve read The Blinding Light, you will be happy to know that Patrick and Jake are back and have plenty of page time along with Lee and Davo.

Davo likes being gay, is out to his family, but he doesn’t want people to be able to tell he’s gay by looking at him. His dislike of all things “girly” – even on Jake and Patrick’s baby girl – also has him rationalizing that relationships are girly, therefore not for him. This aversion doesn’t actually extend to women though. In fact he has an unexplainable, almost immediate attraction to Lee, when he believes Lee to be a woman. He even fears that Lee is turning him straight. When Lee comes clean about his gender, Davo is more upset by the fact that Lee told him a lie, not what the lie was about.

Davo confused me a bit at the start and came off as an ass. I wasn’t sure if he was a misogynist, a femme shamer, a good guy or a bad guy. That didn’t last too long. Davo isn’t a bad guy, he’s just a man who had an idea planted in his head when he was young and twenty years later, has had no reason to change. Now Lee comes along and Lee is that reason.

Lee is a sweetheart. He is smart, easygoing, works at a Drop-In Center for LGBTQ teens and sometimes likes to wear dresses. He feels bad about having misled Davo so when he calls in a panic for help babysitting, Lee is there for him. Lee really has his eyes opened to Davo’s neuroses and wonders if Davo is actually a gay homophobe. Lee quickly sees through Davo’s insensitive remarks and is committed to opening his eyes, by bartering for a guarantee of three future dates to work with.

The two MC’s have a sizzling sexual tension between them and get along very well. Their conversations are both humorous and eye opening as is Davo’s reliance on his trusted oracle, Mr. Magic 8 Ball. I really enjoyed watching Lee break down Davo’s barriers from PDA, being seen with a man in makeup, attending an obviously gay event and even Davo caring about his partner’s pleasure in bed. I never knew what Lee was going to try next. When Davo finally gets up the nerve to test the biggest barrier in their relationship, Lee’s cross dressing, it ends in one of the hottest striptease and sex scenes I’ve read.

In addition to the support of Patrick and Jake, both men have accepting and loving families, which is always great to see. In fact, Lee’s mother Charlotte has an awesome mama bear protecting her cub moment that had me cheering out loud.

As much as I loved the characters and enjoyed the story, there is something that occurs towards the end of the story that has been bothering me since I finished the book.

There is a scene of an attempted sexual assault that plays out. At no time during or after the incident is there any discussion of bringing in the police or filing a report even with the knowledge that this was at least the third such attack by this person. I’m not offended by the plot point itself, but it didn’t feel true to the way I expected the characters to act, especially in light of Lee’s job helping teens who are so at risk for abuse and assault.

With that being said, it doesn’t negate the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the book. Renae Kaye writes books that always entertain and turn up the heat and this was no different. I thought the epilogue, with Davo’s gift to baby Maxine was particularly sweet and did a great job of bringing Davo’s story full circle.

Renae Kaye writes highly original, thought provoking books that are often funny to the point of having to stop reading to catch your breath. You Are the Reason is the story of Davo, a gay man who was damaged in his youth to the point that he believes he can only be, and date, one type of gay man, masculine, strong and definitely not in any way 'girly'. Imagine his surprise at finding himself attracted to a woman! When that woman turns out to be a gay man, Davo embarks on a journey to self acceptance with the help of Lee, a gay man who happens to love dresses, and his friends Patrick and Jake. Davo's journey is fraught with missteps and laugh out loud moments, but also sweet moments and revelations, as he begins to understand that love can come when we least expect it and that strength and masculinity can come in many forms, including gorgeous men in dresses. As with all Renae's books I found this impossible to put down and I was left smiling for hours after I finished.

Well-intentioned

Love the author, but not this book. I hate to leave an unfavorable review for an author whose previous books were all amazing, but there were a few things that made this one different--a major obstacle is that it reads like a PSA for gender-queer/transgender education. Great as a general theme, but terribly preachy in tone and a little too "convenient" as far as this story went. For instance, there were characters that were introduced and then never heard from again, seemingly introduced just to show that transgendered can be men OR women. There were "good" characters who demonstrated proper thinking and, "bad" characters who were judgmental or, in some cases, malicious. All very black and white, all immediately obvious to the reader rather than shown through nuance.

Another issue I had was that there is minimal conflict, and no angst. For some people this might be a benefit but to me "smooth sailing" story lines are not all that interesting and they make character growth seem less credible. Here, many of the characters are familiar from Blinding Light, but in this book they came across as one dimensional. Davo did a complete 180 in his way of thinking but he didn't have to work very hard to get there. In fact, all he had to do was meet Lee, this one amazing guy, and then BOOM, a lifetime of negative thinking is changed in a matter of weeks. Willing suspension of disbelief would normally make this more acceptable, but in context with everything else, I just couldn't get there.

**Spoiler alert: There was also a really bizarre point of conflict dealing with an over the top female rapist that came and went in like 5 pages. It was so odd in the overall context of the story as to seem wholly random. Maybe it's a setup for a book 3, but either way, I was left scratching my head and wondering what the takeaway was. It's also an example of the preachy tone I mentioned above because it felt like the whole point of that really brief and disconnected encounter was to point out to readers that women can be crazy and violate men sexually which is weird bc if you're reading m/m fiction you're likely more open minded than the public at large anyway, and even if not, I don't know that there's any great need to point out that rapists come in all genders as part of this particular story. Very strange choice.***

Despite my lackluster review, I loved all of Kaye's prior books. Loving Jaye is one of my absolute favorites and I reccomend it as book that deals with femme men and gender queer protagonists in a way that is organic and fun to read. This book, in contrast, was a little too try-hard for me to get into it. The author's heart is in the right place, but ultimately this isn't going to be a book I come back to.

That said, I still say give it a whirl. Different readers respond to different things and Renae Kaye is a very good writer. Even though this didn't work for me, I can see how it might appeal to others, especially if you're looking for low tension non-angsty romance with a feel good vibe.

Raunchy, Sweet New Adult Read

Ashlee is virgin who writes a sex blog. She’s also madly in love with her former high school tormentor Jason, who became her stepbrother when their parents married. Home from college for the summer, he discovers her in the kitchen “researching” material for her blog. Will he take the chance to tell her smitten he really is with her? This was a quick run read that was both raunchy and sweet. Nice snappy writing and dialogue between the characters.

Very informative!!

I am Russian so I knew quite a lot about Russian history before opening this book. The book is the best guide to Russian history of the period. Here's why:

-It is written in a wonderful language - very easy to read, yet directed towards scholars.
-History is divided into chapters that concentrate on specific subjects.
-It is full of details that other history books often lack. I was surprised to see Bruce Lincoln use original Russian words instead of finding an English equivalent for it (such as "izba," "domovoj," "dvorovoj," "lapti," etc.).
-Finally, I've not yet read a book that concentrates so much, and gives such an in-depth study, on the subjects that are usually avoided being talked about "pre-revolutionary" times (simply because they are deemed not important in the light of warfare).

With this book you will get a clear idea of what the Russian society looked like on the dawn of WWI. Bruce Lincoln actually spent several years in the Russian archives doing research (but not just for this book), so he has a first-hand knowledge on the subject.

The chapters discuss the following subjects:

Chapter 1 - 1891: The Fateful Year:
Basic overview of the situation in Russia by the year of 1891: famine, construction of trans-Siberian railway, some politics.

Chapter 2 - In the Wake of Famine:
Famine, peasants and life in the country.

A nice suprise

I am very interested in Russian history from 1891 through WWII since I collect a certain rifle that was used during that whole period. I have read various histories from the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905 through many of the WWII books that are available. When I saw this volume at a used book store for $4, I figured what the heck. At least I might be able to use it for a reference.

As I opened the cover and saw it started in 1891, I became optimistic. A few pages into the first chapter convinced me that I found a gem; an interesting and informative overview of what is a very important part of Russian history.

In the forward, W. Bruce Lincoln states the book is "...an effort to explore the lives, thoughts, hopes, and dreams of the men and women who lived in the world's largest empire and to convey some sense of the tensions that tore at the fabric of their existence on the eve of the Great War and the Revolution of 1917." In this effort he succeeds brilliantly.
We see portraits of Tsar Alexander III, Nicholas II, Pobedonostsev, Lenin, Rasputin, and a host of other generals, officials and ordinary people who shaped that era.
We get an insider's look at what life was like in a peasant community, inside the peasant's izba or house, and their attitudes towards schooling, medicine and religion. We go inside the growing factories and the slums the workers inhabited in the cities with rapidly developing industry. We see the new nobility of the industrial barons, the revolutionaries fighting the tsarist autocracy, the defenders of the Old Order...all come to life in these pages.
Graphic descriptions are given of the vicious pogroms against Jews. The impact of the Trans-Siberian Railroad in both economic and a political aspects is covered. The 1904 war with Japan is there with its criminally incompetent generals and and admirals and the war's impact on the development of the Revolution of 1905 as well as the mood of the populace as the nations slides toward the Great War.
This well written, illuminating, detailed and well documented book is a classic work on the Russian society of those years and fleshes out the soul of Russia as few other books do. 16 pages of photos. Highly recommended.

Best autism/ASD text I've used

I've taken four graduate level courses in autism education and have worked in the classroom and in support roles in special education for several years, so I've read a lot of autism-focused stuff. This is the best research-focused and easy to read resource I've found. The first chapter provides an overview of autism and autism spectrum disorders, and the second is focused on basic behavioral strategies. The third digs deeper into behavior, titled "Reducing Challenging Behavior." The fourth and fifth are focused on instruction, curriculum development (ch. 4) and teaching strategies (ch. 5). Chapter 6 is "Remediating Deficits in Speech and Language," with seven and eight focused on defecit remediation is socialization and life skills respectively. Finally, the best chapter of the book, Ch. 9, is titled "Understanding Intervention Controversies," and it provides guidance for evaluating interventions, reasons for program failure, and a story of one family's search for an effective program. It does a nice job of sorting through the mess and media surrounding autism without insulting parents or practitioners who have ascribed to strategies or mindsets that aren't research proven or that have been proven ineffective.

I also like that each chapter has a summary at the end with key points. And each chapter has its own list of references at the end, which makes it easy to do further research in just one area of the text (unlike other books that put all the references at the end).

This book is the best book I bought while completing my autism certification. It is an easy read yet filled valuable information! I will keep this book handy!
