As brilliant as her last....

Firstly - If you haven't read Sane New World: A User's Guide to the Normal-Crazy Mind by Ruby Wax then you MUST (but you don’t need to have read it to enjoy this book...).
This review does not say Verified Purchase as I was given it as a present...
A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled is yet another hilarious, well written and thought provoking read by Ruby Wax.
The word Mindfulness is everywhere at the moment - and Ruby explains exactly what it means, how to do it and why it’s so important to live "in the moment". The book includes a six week mindfulness course, which has been put together with the help of her Oxford university tutor, Professor Mark Williams - this includes mindful thinking, mindful movement, mindful eating. I'm guilty at not eating mindfully - unwrapping a chocolate bar and practically swallowing it hole without even looking at it let alone really tasting it.
You can tell she has really done her research and credit must also go to Joanna Bowen, the editor, who also edited Sane New World. The book is laced with humour and Ruby's own experiences - she is brilliant at making the complex subject of the brain easier to understand. There is something for everyone in this book - parents / teenagers / teachers.... and even if you aren't one of those (I'm not), it is one of those books I will go back to again and again as it’s such a good manual for mindful and healthier living.
It’s no wonder she has earned herself an OBE.

Mind how you go

Let me begin by saying that I'm an unequivocal fan of Ruby Wax's mindfulness work & think her OBE for services to mental health is well deserved.
As Ruby herself says, she is talking to the 5% of the world's population which is adequately housed and fed and which has worked itself into a state of anxiety & frazzlement.
You may remember Ruby as a comedian on TV. She also wrote much of Absolutely Fabulous with Jennifer Saunders. She's funny in my view.
What she also is is very very smart & she has studied neuroplasticity (how the brain can change) at Oxford and has also suffered from depression & anxiety for decades.
"Mindfulness" has been captured most notably in the adult colouring book craze (which I also like BUT think it is more 'escapim' or 'relaxation' than what mindfulness is really about!
In her first book on the subject, Sane New World, Ruby explored how she became a student of mindfulness (she already had a degree in psychology from Berkeley) and explained how the brain works and the science behind mindfulness.
I found it ENORMOUSLY helpful when going through a very anxious time myself. I went to a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) course and was introduced to the 'doing' part - the practice - like any muscle the brain needs to be exercised to stay strong.
Then I bought a book by Ruby's Oxford professor, Mark Williams, and it went through the practice step by step & also covered the brain science stuff.
I saw Ruby's show based on her Sane New World book in Sydney ladt year. I try to remember to incorporate the meditative practice each day.
So now, this book. Well, let's say, given all the above, I didn't need to read it.
But the good thing is, if you haven't read Sane New World, or Prof Williams' books, you don't need to read them - you can hop straight in here.
This book has Ruby's trademark wit - though she really did use her funniest stories in her previous book - compulsive cordering of scatter cushions online, and making a 4th rate tv show diving with sharks come to mind.
It also repeats / explains the brain stuff, which I find fascinating.
The middle section has a 6 week program for practicing mindfulness - it is easy to do - but bloody hard to make yourself actually do every day! It is very similar to what is in Prof William's book - tho his also includes a CD for guided meditations.
Ruby adds some helpful advice about helping children and teens with overcoming anxiety with mindfulness - and I reckon that's wonderful. The world is now full of highly anxious kids & adolescents!
So, a book I'd thoroughly recommend to a layperson but not essential if you've already explored mindfulness and got some resources.
You could jump in & use the 6 week program and save heaps by not going to a course (I won mine in a raffle!!!)
And does it work? I reckon it does. Or maybe it's just retirement! If you are happily retired you may already notice birdsong & smell the roses! Or maybe retirement is enhanced for being aware that the birdsong & roses are there to be noticed???
